Just a thought, but what would be the pros and cons of splitting the votes into different categories like techinical difficulty, aesthetics, etc. Similar to the Olympics.

I think it's important to have just one scale to actually vote on. Sometimes I know I like one photograph better than another, but I might rate it lower if I rated based on a few different categories. It really isn't possible to categorize all the things I see in a photograph that I like/dislike, and the different categories certainly are not always equal when I try to determine which photograph is better.

However, I think it would be good if there was a suggested way to vote on the voting page. edbook posted the method he uses to vote on photos:

Topic: 0, 1, 2, or 3 points depending on how well the image expressed the topic.

Composition: 0, 1, 2, or 3 points depending on the quality of composition

Technical: 0, 1, 2, or 3 points depending on technical quality

I think it would be good if the voting page *recommended* voting based on something like this, although enforcing it in any way would probably make it too difficult to make sure you vote higher for photographs that you like more than others.

Reuben,

That's a great method, but it seems to leave creativity out of the question. There are some photos I "just like" regardless of the technical expertise.

How about breaking the guidelines down further then?

Adherence to topic: 0 - 2 points
Technical ability: 0 - 2 points
Composition: 0 - 2 points
Creativity: 0 - 4 points

This lets creativity in a photo outweigh other factors that might not be as well developed in some photographers (self included!)

If you want another way to vote, how about adding a single vote per voter of "Best Liked Photo" with each voter disallowed from voting on their own photo. Photo with most votes wins catagory even if it only got a few votes. With that out of your system maybe you would vote more on the technical aspects rather than what you 'liked' best.
In other words----you would continue to 'grade' each and every photo just like it is done now AND you would vote on a single BEST photo of the group. Maybe even vote on a quarterly best. (sound a little like BESTPHOTO.Com ?) anyway you go,this is a GREAT site. THANKS!
MAKE THAT-----BESTFOTO.COM

That's why you're my best friend Reuben. You sum it all up in one sentence.
