i have a few photos I have to do where i shot them against a very rough black background.

i need to make everything behind the subject (4 band members) completely black.

anyway to do this besides going in and painting pixel by pixel along their hair lines?

that can get pretty tedious.

thanks!

post an example?

Usually levels are curves can make an almost black background black pretty easily.

Try a levels adjustment layer and drag the left hand slider to the right until the bg goes away, then you can either mask out the band members or use a blank layer set to soft light and paint over them with a brush set to white to bring them back. Dunno if this will work as I have not seen the photograph but you can try :-/

Levels, schmevels. A real DPCer would paint it pixel by pixel. :P
