The pics are a bit small - some of them are alright as they are but the ones which you need to see small detail are definitely too small :(

Nice simple tutorial and well explained :)

Right you are! This was originally a post in a thread, so those were the thumbnails. Click 'em and they get big. But you're right; we should put the full-size ones right in the tutorial.

The black and white masking box does not appear until you "Reveal Selection".
"Reveal Selection" is greyed out until you exit the quick mask to show the marching ants.
It is difficult to see the marching ants in the examples at this size, so it wasn't apparent (to me) what the step was (which was necessary to proceed), but once I saw the selection line on the enlargement, the remaining steps were apparent.

No problem with the tutorial, but I think the easiest way to make a permanent mask is to go to the Channels Palette and select "New Channel." That becomes a new (transparent) mask onto which to can paint or select/fill to create the masking elements.
