This is my first image ever in a publication. Kiteworld Magazine packaged "The Kiteworld Guide To: Holidays" along with their April-May '07 issue. This picture is on page 72 along with an article about kiteboarding in Miami.

Ken, the kiteboarder in the picture, is an instructor who writes articles in hopes of having them published. He asked me to provide him pictures of the good spots in and around Miami to kitesurf to submit with his article on the same to magazines. This magazine didn't publish his article along with all of the shots that I took. They wrote a guide to 22 spots around the world and they used this one shot for a brief write-up about kitesurfing in Miami.

It's not the cover, but it's a start.

It wasn't the best of what I submitted either. You can see more in My kitesurfing portfolio

Congratulations, Robert. You have some great kiting shots, you should submit more to the magazine in hopes of becoming a regular contributor for them. :D

Everybody - - - Thanks for all the congratulatory comments.

MattO - - - No pay from the magazine. Supposedly, they are still new and don't have much of a circulation yet and therefore no funds (yeah right). I don't mind for now since I haven't gotten much of my foot in the door yet. Ken, and several instructors owe me quite a lot in the way of instruction and discounts on gear and I'm O.K. with that for now. I want to get known for this type of photography first and then start getting a financial return down the road.

Cindi - - - Yes, submitting shots to more magazines is exactly what I plan on doing. I accompanied Ken and several other kitesurfers to a race from Jupiter to Ft. Lauderdale (approx. 70 miles) and got a lot of shots of that for the race organizers and for another article that Ken is writing. The article on good kitesurfing locales in Miami is still a possiblity. A company that makes the boards has also asked if I would be interested in taking shots of their pros on their boards and wanted to know if I like to travel (a dumb question :)

Congratulations on your first published image. Nice.
(Did the 22 Spots around the World mention 3rd Ave, San Mateo, here in the San Francisco area?)

No it didn't. In the U.S. it covered beaches in North and South Carolinas, Miami, Key West, and Puerto Rico.

22 spots around the world definitely leaves no room for all the fantastic kitesurfing sites in the U.S. (not to mention the rest of the world!) I would have fit in the Columbia River Gorge somehow....and maybe 3rd Ave, San Mateo :)

Oh, yes. I've seen some stunning video material on the Columbia River Gorge. But what I saw was wind sailing, not kiting.

Great shot Robert! Congratulations!

Nice shot. As a kitesurfer myself, I know how hard it can be to get shots that show how good the sport is. I think there's one or two shots of me in my folio, taken by my brother. Having access to great riders helps, and having a good vantage point makes a huge difference! My local spot isn't very photographic, due to brown muddy water, no waves, and no background scenery! :)

As for Kiteworld Magazine, don't believe them - this mag is NOT new (unless there are 2!) It's one of the earliest kite-specific magazines, and it's been in worldwide sale for about 5 years now. As for small circulation, yes, I would believe that. It's a niche sport, so not much of a market, and there are other local magazines that focus better on kitesurfing, whereas from what I've seen kiteworld tends to be a bit broader.

Anyway, well done with the photo, and with getting it published! It's a good start!

Great Shot! I wish I was good enough to get something published. I am going to have to enter many more contests outside this site and start enter challenges on this site! Again great job and pic!
