Hey, are people thinking about selective desat images? It seems like telling a story is best, as opposed to just coloring something to look cool.

I'm going to have a tidy little selective desat collection after the challenge is done - I've already made up 2 different options, and neither of them is either my #1 or #2 preference. :)

(I know many of us are now in DPL teams, but I certainly hope we continue to help each other out and share ideas.)

And look! We can all just step out the front door and shoot sunsets! :P

I'm so hatin' selective desat at the moment...

I totally agree with you Deb, and I like to share my favorite sunset image here as well.....

Ever since I took this, it has been on my desktop, as it calms me down if upset or stressed, please me when it's a cold wet winters day, and also because I like it.....

Went night shooting last night, looking for some material for the B&W project and found this. I have a real love of odd color contrasts and I like grain so I honked my ISO to 1600 and messed about.

I'd appreciate any input.

I finally got things all figured out, and sent the files to the lab for my first (and only) 2 clients yesterday. Got the call last night to ask for my payment info, and I should have the photos shortly !!

I actually relented and ordered one of their "metallic" finishes for a photo of Bear too - I want to see how it looks before I offer it to anyone else.

I ordered this photo as a metallic 8x10 :

But I got the idea after ordering that the metallic would better suit a black & white photo. Maybe next time I'll try that.

hahaha! cute pic Lea!

love the new clubhouse - can my bf park his houseboat offshore?

DPL at 5.0998, 7 comments, all useful.

gonna go vote on silky-smooth now, love the food porn shots on there...

leah, which lab are you using?

if there's anyone else out there that likes grain, check to see if your camera does go up to 3200 iso, or beyond. on the D20 it's hidden in the custom area, so people don't unknowinlgy use it and them call canon to complain. unfortunately, this meant that it took me nearly two years to find it... 'cause i wouldn't read the manual, or anything like that...

Wow, I live in the mountains and always wanted a summer home at the beach. Thanks for making it happen :)

Here's my brainstorming list for selective desat (minus the idea I'm going to be using):

My interpretation of it was that selective desat should be used to highlight something that stands out of its surroundings - a burst of colour and energy surrounded by monochrome. Kind of like whatever director it was that shot his films in B&W, and put in the significant scenes in colour. This isn't the only way to use a selective desat, it's just one I happen to like. And here's some ideas:

- a kid playing (colour) with tired B&W adults watching him
- portrait of a person lost deep in thought (colour), with the surroundings gradually fading into monochrome
- a plant (colour) in the middle of concrete surroundings
- lovers holding hands and looking at each other (colour) with the rest of the surroundings fading into B&W
- street shot with B&W people, but coloured cars and adverts
- colour street performer in the middle of a B&W crowd
- lots of B&W grumpy men in suits walking down the street, with a colourfully dressed smiling hippy walking towards the camera
- B&W person stumbling into the kitchen in the morning, and going towards a coloured mug of coffee
- B&W nighttime shot with one coloured neon sign left

I'm going to wander a bit with my camera tomorrow with desat in mind, and I've beent thinking about the username challenge too. Too bad this picture was taken last year; it's a sure fit for someone on Team Minus.

Just adding to the beach thread...

the world was a little tilted when I went to the beach, or I had too much to drink... don't remember... :p

Not until the end of 2007.
They're looking for new software now to use after that point.
