My son is going to Fredonia this summer for a summer workshop, so I am looking for interesting places nearby that my wife and I can visit for a day or two en route. Actually, anything interesting that's not too far off of our "course" on the thruway in Western NY (coming from Ithaca). Of course, we are considering the possibility of Ithaca, though I was just there this fall, but I never did make it to Taughanick State Park.

My wife wants things that are interesting, I of course, want photo ops!

Anyone been to Canandiagua or Geneva, NY?

Suggestions welcome.

Canandaigua has (last I knew) evening, outdoor music festivals in a park at the end of the lake...people drive out from Rochester for them.

Geneva is a quaint college town.

If you want the scenic route take a cruise along Route 20 whenever you feel the urge to drop down off that boring toll road.

Don't forget to visit the "Grand Canyon of the East"...Letchworth State Park. It's filled with waterfalls unlike those around Ithaca.

You'll be in wine country. Head between the lakes...the further west between Fingerlakes the better. For the best wine slip by the south end of Keuka Lake...Bully Hill winery was world-reknowned... There are others about as good now.

If you do decide to take the southern route home, you could stop by Corning. The Corning Glass works has an awesome collection of historical glass going back to the earliest times. And you can watch glass-blowers at work as well. Shops on the main street also have some working glass studios in the back.

You'll also be only a stone's throw from Niagra Falls...

(psst...it's spelled Taughannock, btw)

Thanks! Letchworth State Park sounds interesting to me. I'll look into it. BTW - in the text below "coming from Ithaca" was supposed to say "coming from Albany"! Too much wine at dinner!

Once you're in the Fredonia area, Chautauqua Lake is a very nice, artsy fartsy kind of area. Chautaqua Institute is an interesting place, and Mayville is kinda quaint. If you like chicken wings, head to Bemus Point for some at the Casino (which isn't actually a casino).

...yer welcome! I've been all over NYS....and, somehow, I just knew you didn't live in Ithaca and probably wouldn't be coming from there...

There's some gardens in Canandaigua if you insist on stopping through there I'll look up the name. :)

Canandaigua is a great little town. The gardens that KaDi is talking about is Sonnenberg Gardens. They should be beautiful this time of year.

I would also recommend checking out Keuka Lake, it's my favorite of the Finger Lakes and perhaps the most photogenic.

And, since I can tell from your last post that you enjoy wine, I would recommend checking out some of the wineries in the area. Seneca Lake has the most to offer and Watkins Glen is a good town to check out. The State Park there has a wonderful gorge that rivals everything in Ithaca.

There's auto racing at Watkins Glen, depending when you're there, //www.theglen.com/, as well as a state park, and a large number of wineries on both Seneca and Keuka Lakes.
Farther on outside of Rochester is the Genesee Country Village and Museum and Genesee Country Nature Center, //www.gcv.org/, and of course in Rochester is the George Eastman House photography museum, //www.eastmanhouse.org/.

Taughannock is so totally overrated! (j/k I love it).

Letchworth is supposed to be awesome. I want to get out there before I move out of NY.

Here are a few links for you.

Routes 5 and 20

Dancing Wings Butterfly Garden

Mumford

Taughannock is beautiful, but the large fall is pretty much it. There's an easy 1 mile hike to the base of the falls. It's all flat and there are a couple small waterfalls in the beginning. The rest is just a creek with high gorge walls. The upper view of the falls is nice. There's not as much to see there as someplace like Treman or Watkins Glen State Park though.

Wow. Too bad I didn't see this earlier. I live in Canandaigua and it's the most amazing town in the world. I only have a second, but Canandaigua Lake is the most expensive lake to live on in the US (beat out Tahoe!) so needless to say, it's pretty nice. Bristol Mountain (ski resort) offers rides up their lifts when there's no snow so you can hike up around there. If you go out Route 21 (i think it's 21...I've been away at college for 8 months) there's an AMAZING place to pull off and take a picture of the lake. You can't miss it. Main St. has tons of old buildings, and most of them are historically important. The court house is where Susan B. Anthony was tried. I could keep going and going but Canandaigua is a GREAT photographic town :)
