I just installed the trial version of Paint Shop Pro XI, and stumbled upon this.
That's it, I'm staying with PSPX until the Photoshop CS3 Design Student Edition begins to ship.

Part of the Protexis copy protection and license management software. This will typically be installed by other software that uses this to protect itself from being illegally copied.

When will they learn that copy protection only ever harms honest users? Pirates will always be able to circumvent it.

Also, I wouldn't have thought they'd want to give ANY excuse for people to start using pirated photoshop instead.

Actually, I don't know what they are getting upset about. Windows does this. Are they going to uninstall windows and hide in the basement until somebody gives them linux?

Many other applications also do similar things, and I'd be surprised if Photoshop doesn't do it as well. Many applications check with online licence servers. Some even check for updates, and automatically install updates.

Anyway, it's not spyware at all. They aren't collecting personal information about you, or reporting back anything about your individual computer or your actions. (You gave them much more information just by buying the software in the first place.) It is a 3rd party software protection module. Piracy is a fact of life, and the slight overhead of an extra process running on the machine is a small consequence.

I've looked at upgrading to PSP XI, almost did, but after reading thru some of the comment/feedback in this newsgroup I've decided to hold off. Lot's of bugs in XI currently it seems.

Corel Newsgroup PSP XI

I hope that link works. If not, it's under Corel Support/Answers (scroll down for your version of their product).

LOL. It's funny that my decision NOT to upgrade is based on info found on Corel's own site. :)
