Since no one was really happy with our ideas for the next WPL season that we announced last week, we decided to re-factor them a little bit. ;) So, here are a few of the things that we're planning:
- We're sticking with the general format of the WPL as it exists now.
- Teams will be allowed 7 users max for the first season, but a team can be created with as few as 5 users. Depending on the demand, this may change for future seasons.
- We're building some interfaces to streamline the team creation process. Additionally, there will be a free agent pool that users who aren't on a team yet can join, and captains in need of an extra teammate or two can pull from.
- Only members will be able be team captains, but any user of the site can participate.
- The season will support an infinite number of teams, though the number must be divisible by 24. If 73 teams are created in the pre-season, the last team to be "finalized" will unfortunately be dropped. A "finalized" team is one that a captain has created, invited all teammates, and the minimum number of teammates required (currently 5) have accepted the invitation.
- We'll have team profiles (much like we have user profiles) complete with team history for current and past seasons.
- Each team will have it's own private forum thread per season so that they can stay organized from week to week.
- We're shooting for a May 1st launch of the next season. Captains will be able to create their teams on this date as well. Look for another announcement soon!
- And as you may have noticed, the subject isn't a typo. The WPL on DPC will be called "DPL" (short for the DPC Photography League), though that's not to say we'll forget about how everything got started. We plan to have some written history about how the WPL got started, and how the first few seasons played out.
- We're looking to build a FAQ for this, so if you have questions, do ask them!

Sounds great!
My question: Will the running total of finalized teams be visible? Say for example there are 71 teams signed up 10 min before sign-ups are closed. We could all badger the DPC community at that point to create one more team so the other 23 that would otherwise be dropped can play. |

| Sounds great ... How long are you thinking the sign up period will be ... If May 1 is the first sign up date, when are you thinking the season will start? |

I wonder what people would think of putting their names in the ring by a certain date and having each person flighted onto a team and compete from there. This could ensure that everyone who wanted to participate could, plus it would make the competitions more fair and interesting. Instead of a team comprised of all dudephil's competing against a team of all Scalvert's, Laurus', Goodman's, Ursula's etc., there could actually be a chance of good competetion amongst all teams.
Maybe it's more of a headache than anyone would want to mess with. Just a thought.

But then what would happen to Team Noob and others like us?? We have banded together to learn from one another and we all get along :)
What would happen if someone got "drafted" to a team where they don't like someone and are forced to play with them? Hell in a handbasket LOL |

I'd imagine it'd actually be slightly easier to do it this way. Random placings aren't that hard to do.
However, it'll never happen. One of the *main* draws of the W/DPL is having people able to choose a group of buddies/friends/people they know/similar styled photographers/etc. to bring together in friendly competition. The fact is, very few people actually care where they place and finish in the W/DPL unless they're close to a top spot.. and then natural competitiveness takes over of course. It's generally about the fun and comraderie(sp) and whatnot. If you start making it random teams, it'll lose that main draw, and I doubt you'd have anywhere near the number of people signing up for it. |

It actually might get more to participate since it doesn't look like a clique or group of favorites. Random sound great! |

Random does not sound great. The WPL build friendships by allowing captains and photographers to pick there own teams. History has proven that it doesn't matter if you stack a team with high scoring photographers. Over the course of one year and four seasons, the WPL has NOT had a repeat winner.

How does it build friendships if you already know your teammates before you join? Looks like it would actually build friendships by not knowing.
Anywho, like I said - just a thought. |

| I knew NONE of my WPL teamates until we joined WPL3. They might like to boot me...but I now am extremly fond of the friendships we seem to have made as a result of WPL...even their hubby's aren't so bad (aka MAK and Mr. Aimee) |

I think I speak for our whole team when I say we're really looking forward to this next evolution of the W/DPL! That is, after a short break of course. :)
