While thinking about the soft focus challenge and too cheap to buy a lens. And don't even want to mess with vaseline. I discovered panty hose, yes, colored panty hose toes. I cut several colors of my wifes oldies and discovered some interesting things. They stretch nicely over my lens and bingo. I didn't do any set-up, I shot my daughter with flash on slow, at approx. 1/4 second, so red-eye happened. See several examples below.

black

toupe

white

I also cut blue (two colors), gray and a goldish toupe. Only problem my model walked out on me.

Let me know what ya think.

Why are all the good models so tempermental?

The first and third ones worked quite well, but I find the second one a bit too soft. I'm not sure it's the colour though, maybe something to do with the thickness of the pantihose, or the amount you stretched them. Keep experimenting.

you know sometimes this really annoys me when a tip is posted in this portion of a challenge. I had someone give me this suggestion last night and I tried it too. I liked the outcome also and was planning to use it in the challenge, now I have to reevaluate what I did and think is there enough difference in it..

Now my Wife has no toes to all her panty hose. Which color is best did you say?

Depends on what effect you want. Nude and suntan pantyhose make almost a sepia tone.

any meshed cloth will do the job. the finer the mesh, the more diffuse the effect. i used some nude panty hose over the lens on this shot ..

Personally I kind of liked the black. It appears to add a bit more contrast than the other colors. Van
