Adam,
Let me first start off by saying that you are an AWESOME live photographer! You have some amazing shots!

I do concerts also for the local venue here... I don't have the problems you have, because they take care of setting things up and getting me my passes etc etc. I used to work for a small club also, and I would get my passes through them as well. My neighbor shoots a band at the same venue, and the band makes sure to get him his pass before even going into the venue. That way, the management can't bitch. He is there WITH THE BAND!

My suggestion, is that if you are working with bands directly... make sure that THEY give you all the passes you need to be there (where ever that may be) If you are "employeed" by the band, no one can refuse you. If they try, you can get in contact with the band then and they will settle it for you.

If you want to keep doing concert photography, why not look into getting a gig with your local stadium or big time arena (like me). You have one hell of a portfolio, and any venue would be proud to have you. Only thing, with venue photography... it's all done without flash. They are much stricter also. I can only stay for the first 2-3 songs (depending on the bands demands) and I am not allowed to stay for a whole show unless I purchase a ticket. I don't get paid to do what I do... but I enjoy it alot. Some venues may pay... the club I worked for did pay me but it wasn't worth the drive for the small amount I was being paid. My venue is large.. but they are newer, so they don't get alot of money in. Still... I get to tell people that I am a concert photographer, which I think is pretty damn cool!

Another thing I was thinking... you are 17. Some people may not take you seriously because you are so young. Know what I mean? You could be some punk kid with a fancy camera, trying to get into a show for free. Not that I am saying you are... but some people may think that.

When I worked for the small club, my first show had me in tears! I went to shoot a show, and when I got there... the guy I worked for forgot to leave me a pass and he wasn't there. I went up front where I was told to go and I got yelled at and told there were no cameras allowed. I tried to explain that I was there to work for the venue and I was told if I needed to shoot, I would have to go to the DJ booth. Ok. So, I go there and stand there and wait for the 2nd act to come on. The DJ yells at me and tells me that I am taking up space and getting in his way! I am very tiny... no way I was taking up space! So, I stood off as far as I could and started shooting the 2nd act. All of a sudden this huge guy comes up and says, "Are you taking photos of MY band?" "Yes sir, I am hired by the "venue" to take photos of the night" "Well, where is your pass??" "I don't have one... Steve isn't here and no one gave me one" I was told to erase the photos right away or I would be sued!!!! I held back my tears and instead of erasing the photos, I slipped a new card in and that one in my bra. No one saw it! haha So, the main act was about to come on and the DJ tells me, "Get the fuck out of my booth or I will have you carried out of here on a stretcher!!" Right there I burst into tears and left. I missed the main act. I called Steve the next day and told him what happened. He said I am so sorry about 100 times and said he would have a word with the people in charge of the bands and that I was to come back the next saturday and shoot them again. Well, I was terrified! But, he was there when I got there and took me to my spot. The first guy who yelled at me still gave me dirty looks... but I was all smiling and happy because he couldn't say a damn thing to me! So, I did about 5 shows for them and then I quit. It was an hour drive, shows didn't start until 10pm and finish about 12-1am, then an hour drive home... all for $50! No thanks!

Anyways... I wanted to share my story and tell you good luck! You have an awesome portfolio and you can go far with this. Keep your chin up and stay out of that place! :)

Id rather not quote that post you just made( its quite large), but this is in repsonse to it.

Yea, the venue i got kicked out of, first 2-3 songs, no flash, etc etc.

I do have tow friends that book the shows in the area, so i have quite a few local shows/2nd market tours that i can still shoot. So its not a total loss, which is nice. Im lucky enough to even be able to shoot those.

Your situation/experience is simliar to mine. Tears and all.

Yea, people do not take me seiously at larger venues, they usually think I took on photography, similar to how a 14 year old would take on sagging his pants.

yesuhhhh

So, I guess, my friend had the exact thing happen to her. Basically, when the tour manager got frusturated with the venue, and walked her in on his own, the venue said that they were worried that the show would get to violent and the pictures would end up in the newspaper.. I guess when they have shows with alot of body passing, and "moshing", they rather not have press covereage, of any kind.

She also said that when she took pictures of the crowd, they got really pissed at her.

Finally, some anwsers.
