Ok folks...I'm going to buy one or the other.

I have the chance of a MK1 and know that the build quality if far superior to the MK2 but overall, how do the pair compare in your experience.

I have seen samples from both and am pretty fixed on the MK1 but is there any reason i should consider the MK2 ?

the mark 2 is new ... it's cheaper ... it's easier to return a new item to a store than a used item to someone who doesn't think it's broke ... i've never once heard a single story of the build quality of the mark 2 being a factor

i list these only cuz you ask

The MK1 has a metal mount and has and will continue to last the test of time.

That's true of the mount, but what of the other internal components, electronics, motor, gears etc. Those are much more likely to fail well before either metal of plastic mount. If you have a problem with the MKI, you will be on the hook for repairs. The MKII will be under warranty for some time.

I've also never heard of anyone having problems with the plastic mount of the MKII. I know I've taken mine on and off the camera hundreds of times and it shows little wear. Do you have any information about plastic mount failures on the MKII?

Not supposed to use oil filter pliers though.
;)

Sorry to hear you had a bum one - after using mine for a couple months, I kick myself for not getting one sooner.

I got a new one and it works fine, although I dislike the fact that it doesn't have a real focusing ring.

MKII will be lighter.
I'd probably prefer the metal one, but it doesn't really matter.

Anyone know anything about this Canon FD 50mm 1:1.8? Apparently the EF replaced it?

FD is the old manual focus Canon mount, EF is the current AF mount. They are not compatible.

Yes, there are converters, but generally they are not worth the money and the hassle.

Heh i searched around trying to find FD lense or atleast a converter to use the EF lenses. Don't need autofocus of course. The camera is an Aperture Priority Automatic Shutter Program Canon AV-1.

Saw this thread figured yall would know about the lense. The aperture refuses to move the dial just slides.
