i have a feeling this is going to be one of those challenges where voting is going to be all over the place. people are either going to love something or hate it.

i can tell you right now, i'm not going to be playing it "safe" on this one...

Well I myself would appreciate it, but I think as far as an overall score your goose is cooked ...

Propaganda < this is hard.
I'm finding that the line between advertizing and propaganda is very thin.

i dont even know what propaganda is actually defined as!

Shadow have a look at the following pages, it might clearify propaganda a little for you. Also the various techniques being used in propaganda can be viewed on these pages.

//homepage.mac.com/leperous/PhotoAlbum1.html
//www.esrnational.org/whatispropaganda.htm

I find it a pity we aren't allowed to spot edit. Then we would have got some real good propaganda :D. On the other hand one now has to be even more creative and after all this is a photo site, not a Photoshop site :).

Idea:

Get a megafon and let somebody pose for you with it and "shout into it" and there must be a big sign "VOTE FOR ME!"

Hmm, only thing I don't have is a megafon :(

So, propagadanda is to sell an idea, and advertising is to sell a product? I´m very confused with this challenge...

This is going to be a tough contest, because propaganda posters are usually loaded with text. We'll all probably learn some techniques from the winners!

Now I need to think of something...

I believe that the Title here will be very impactant. This will link the idea expressed in the picture with the concept that you whant to fix in "costumer" minds.

Couldn't propaganda also be the twisting of a photo by editing into something that it is not?

Marilyn, Exactly what do you mean?

I'm trying to think of an example of what I think you mean, but I can't think of one.

Maybe a photo of a senator laughing and dancing with a 20 year old in skimpy clothing, implying he's partying with hookers or something. When in reality its a picture of him with his neice at a family wedding. (Not a shot I can see working well for this challenge, but that's the kind of thing I envision from what she described.)

The irony of this challenge is that the strongest propaganda is in many cases offensive to a certain group of people. Wartime, for example, is a classic propaganda-infested scenario, and the Cold War was full of world-wide propaganda.

Oh, and if you're looking for an idea, here's one... "Reds under the Bed". But heck, I'm not going to enter this one anyway, so feel free to steal that idea...

I agree with ronners, that's my biggest problem with comming up with an idea. People are going to take it as offensive. I've had some that I think fit pretty well, but I know that either I wouldn't like them myself or many others wouldn't.

I almost think there should be a screen that comes up when you start voting that says --

Please remember, the challenge was "Propaganda." This will probably mean that there will be pictures you find offensive or disagree strongly with. If you find your self getting angry, the picture probably did the job it was supposed to do, and you should give it a 9. Give karmat a 10.

Just kidding; I don't have a prop. shot, yet. I had an idea, but decided it could possibly get me in trouble, so I am trying ot think of something else.

It took me a while to come up with anything. I work in advertising and it is a funny thing that when I told people at work about this challenge they all said take a picture of the work we do everyday. Funny but true. The sarcastic joke in advertising is that we sell guns and cigarettes to kids. (scary how true that is sometimes!) I think in this challenge the titles will be the key. I also think you can't help but offend someone or yourself doing this challenge. I guess it let's us all kinda step out and think about some things that make us who we are. I'm happy with the shot I entered (until I think oh this would be bettter, anyway : ) I hope people vote on the photos doing the job meeting the challenge, over whether they offend them. Should be interesting Can't wait to see what we have!!

Someone had mentioned (from a different thread of the same topic) that personal feelings and beliefs should be put aside when voting. I think that that is something we have to keep in mind as we cast our votes. What I have in mind for an entry, although I haven't shot it yet, would probably generate different reactions both from the propagandist and the propagandee (is that a word?). On the other hand, I think that if the photo stirs varying degrees of emotion especially in this challenge, then the photo is effectively sending the message across.
