I'm going out today to see if I can shoot some people :-P I'm aiming for the cute kiddies, but may have to shoot the occasional drunk youth celebrating carnaval ;-)

Need clarification. Does 'Street Photography' mean it has to be on the street or does it mean out and about anywhere but with people as the main focus of the shot?
02/17/2007 05:51:56 AM · #207
200 voters will probably have 100 different ideas about what IS and what is NOT "Street Photography" ... but any public place should qualify if people are the main focus. Now ... how the scores will go from SOME voters if they don't see an ACTUAL STREET, well that is a gamble you have to take in order to express yourself. LOL

It seems to be Carnival Weekend. In Cape Town there is a Gay Pride Carnival and parade too....going to be a lot of interesting images in this challenge!

WOW! I agree with you ... my entry about every day life in Europe will prolly be not so dynamic as Mardi Gras and Carnival shots. But I had a WHACK of fun making this entry and I will be doing MUCH more street photography in the near future ... I found it a HUGE rush shooting serepticiously (sp?) from the hip and I LOVE that looking UP angle that gives you on the subjects not even mentioning the edge that not having the camera perfectly straight gives the image. I am already addicted and will be shooting from the hip a LOT more from now on.

I wish we had a gay pride fest going on. There are always interesting shots there. I see we have a Fire & Ice fest going on, I'm not really sure what it is, but I might check it out.

No! Anything in the "Public" basically, but do yourself a favor and google street photography.

There was a link on page two of this discussion and it states the following:

"Street photography is a type of documentary photography that usually features people in candid situations in public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions, and other settings."

That was helpful.

I bet you'll find more if you look for nothing.

Chances are if you're taking shots of events...parades there are probably a million other people taking the same shots. Nothing we haven't seen, over and over, more than likely.

I've already done several "nothing" trips this week. Jax isn't a very pedestrian-friendly city so its kinda hard to find concentrations of people for some variety to shoot. I think I got the best shots in St. Augustine on Wednesday, but with 2 more days to shoot I might as well keep shooting. I just need to know where to find lots of people. Downtown Jax is NOT the right answer (tried that on Tuesday)! lol

If I may make a suggestion. Find and interesting place first. A place with some sort of (unique?)urban dynamic...a calm and peaceful place or a spot with some tension or place anywhere in between. Plant yourself for a while and let something cool unfold. Don't focus on the crowds.

The background is what will set the good shots aside from the midland IMO.

It doesn't get a lot better than this...

...if you wait long enough a lime green Volkswagen Bug and a Goat might both come into frame at the same time.
