I hit the site for the first time in a little while and when I saw this title, I thought it said "street pornography challenge"...

It would be a lot more fun.

-20 C plus windchill here in Calgary. The snow has been coming down in bucket fulls. It does actually create a bunch of great opportunities for this challenge however. With people running to where they need to go, or walking with their hands in their pockets and heads down trying to keep warm there's a lot to shoot.

There's also a lot of homeless people out and they are so noticable with this weather. I know its a cliche subject for this type of challenge but there's definitely a story to tell with homeless people panhandling in 20 below weather.

I didn't fully realize how sketchy Vancouver's downtown eastside was until shooting down there today for this challenge. Anytime I've been down there before, I've left as soon as I could; actually being down there and looking at everything was a real eye opener.

That said, it was a good experience, and I met some great people with amazing stories to tell. I hope everyone else shooting for this challenge has a similar positive experience, especially if theyre like me and stepping way outside their personal and photographic comfort zones.

Well, here has been my experience with stepping out of my comfort level. The first time I tried to go out, I got to the area of town I wanted to photograph, never got out of the car and kept on going.

The second time, I shot a few in the car but quickly left the area because I felt really guilty taking photos of people on the street.

The third time is today. I got out of my car and walked around the Main Street and took lots of zoomed shots. Still haven't talked to anybody, but I have gotten at least to the point where I took some pictures. Lets see if I can get out and actually talk to some of the people next time. I may not enter anything because it won't be good enough, but I must admit it is pushing me into areas I have not really been comfortable with, and still am not fully.

Tomorrow is going to be a blizzard. I would like to try to take my car to a local town nearby and get shots like Alfred Steiglitz, who loved going out in really bad weather and getting shots that nobody else would ever dream of doing.

I walked to solve the problem of a quick and easy exit...

I too felt guilty and was trying (unsuccessfully) to shoot from the hip most of the day, so I eventually bit the bullet and started asking people if I could take some photos of them. Not true street, but hey, I don't have a little Leica, I have a big dSLR. Theres no such thing as "candid" with a camera this size...

So, does street photography have to involve people?

Not quite that bad in Detroit ... but sure is cold enough that I have just about ZERO interest in heading out to shoot!!

hm.. going over some of my really old stuff.. is this street enough.. peoplelessness okay.. it's different to what other people do.. dunno..

Okay, now that I've read through this thread a bit and enjoyed looking at so many intersting photos, I think I'm forming an idea of what "street photography" is.

One of the images that sticks in my mind from a few years back is probably what led me to start carrying a camera all the time, 'cause of course I didn't have one when I saw it. Three ladies in downtown Chicago: one I can't remember, one young fashionable African-American woman, one sixtyish white lady wearing a girlish cotton print dress, gray pigtails and a straw hat, all three of them at lunchtime peering transfixed into the window display of jewelry at a fairly tony pawn shop.

I sympathize with folks who despair of getting "street" images if they live away from town, or in suburbs like mine whose streets are usually empty. Now, if we could have a "strip mall photography" challenge, that might offer some opportunity. Good luck to all!

I don't believe that you MUST have people in street photography but I think that many of the voters will punish you if there are no people in the photo.

I woke up to 3 friggin degrees outside today ... I'm thinking that this isn't the day to head out to shoot ... I'd get 3 shots and my battery would drain and shutter freeze!!

I went out to the city on Tuesday and to the tourist areas yesterday -- got some fun and funny shots, but nothing stellar, I'm afraid. Think I'll take today to study some of the greats and see if there is something I'm not seeing in my own shots or if I need to go try again.

I love a challenge that gets me out of my normal routines! :)

I'm so jealous that you can go outside without freezing ... I need a super fast shutter speed to try and counter my shivering!!!

I agree with you. I am really excited about this challenge. It does get me out of the house and to places I don't normally go. I'll just have to bundle up and shoot fast.

We've been lucky to break 0 for about two weeks. Here's my BAD shot which was bad, neither I nor the lady could hold still! Note the -15 for the temp!

The good news is that this weekend it will be in the 20's, that's like spring for MN, people should be out and about.

Just an opinion but tourist and tourist areas usually produce boring shots, at least for me. I can't stand looking at tourist.

I don't mean that as a rule there are always exceptions but tourists are more than likely looking and usually not doing. The cool stuff happens off the beaten path.
