I think I will have to search the internet for some book titles. I am from Romania and the names are translated different sometimes. It has to be an english name and I don't want to be wrong again because of my poor english. It seems that I entered DPC with the left foot in. In case you wonder... just a romanian saying. I go from one mistake to another. Has anyone felt the same at some moment?

Oh, that might be tough for you amazoneea. I am originally from the Czech Republic and sometimes I read books that people here would have no clue about.

By the way, I loved your Grace photo of the little girl. It was one of my favourite ones in that challenge.

On similar note, for anyone who has a cat - this time you might be able to get away with putting a photo of your cat in a challenge legally.

Why don't someone do "A Cat in the Hat" book by Dr. Zeus.

I do not have a cat, so I am passing this idea onto anyone who can use it.

Thanks Timmi! You just gave mine away! Now I will have to find something else! BOOHOOO!! Oh and in case you're wondering, I'm just kidding, this will be one chance to get a decent shot of my cat, IF SHE WILL CO-OPERATE!!!! :)

I will be happy to help with language questions ... here or by email. And I know a lot of book titles.

Maybe, similar to the Food/Recipe challenge, we should put an ISBN number or link to Amazon for our book in the photo details area.

Will books that were made into movies be marked down in the eyes of the voter?

I have wondered that as well Shutterfly.

Take a classic book, and it has since been made into a movie, which is better known than the book.

Are the TV/Cinema only crowd going to mark it down as they'll think "That's not a book, it's a film ... off topic".

Not to start a fuss, but it would be interesting to not just do the cover photo for a book, but to extend the concept to designing the whole cover.

The books I read are not very common either and have titles like "Impact Mechanics" and "Principles of Underwater Sound for Engineers" or "Mathematical Modeling for Physicists"

Well, I don't read the challenge as 'doing a cover photo for a book', but rather taking a photo of which the title is also a book title.

For example, a pic of a dove flying over war torn Iraq, titled 'War and Peace'. The picture doesnt have to have anything to do with the book, just the title.

In your 'page turners', 'Impact Mechanics' could be a picture of a couple of car mechanics working on a car which has been in a crash recently - therefore titled 'Impact Mechanics'.

Yeah, I see your point.

I still think doing the whole cover, text and all would be fun. Maybe I'll do that at the same time. I'll be sure to pick some weighty tome like "Incompressible Flow".

I don't really have a "format" to follow when I am voting on pictures, but might develop one for "Book Titles". It might take longer to go through them all, but I think I will try to look at the picture without seeing the title and see if I can come up with the title just from the visual. That might add some more fun to the judging. I think if it is a book I know and I get it right, that might add a point. No points off if I get it wrong or I never heard of the book of course.

I don't think there will be as much complaining about "Off Topic" pictures in this challenge as there were in "Still Life". This is a much more narrowly defined challenge. I'm with shutterfly in hoping that photos of books that were made into movies will not be penalized for being "off topic".

I, for one, am looking forward to everyone's interpretation (lots of creativity out there).

Nowhere that I can find does it say that this should be a book cover. I fully intended to do something that expresses the meaning of the book/title, not a come on but more comprehensive. Is that wrong? Anne

You noticed that most of the movies now release books that were based on the movie.

What's peoples' potention voting pattern on this I wonder?

I agree Anne. If you title your picture "Gone With The Wind" which shows a building with the roof missing and wind-damaged trees, that would be meeting the challenge because your title quite obviously is appropriate for your photo and it is also the title of a book. Just because your photo may not have anything to do with the book itself is not relevent.

Well, I think your left foot is as good as both of mine! Two of your 3 shots are on my favourites list.

I did a google search for book titles also. It was very helpful.

But do people think there is an advantage of doing a book that everyone will have heard of.

For instance, I can think of two entries based on wind, though I have no idea how I'd do the second one, short of inserting the handle of an axe where it doesn't belong ....

1) Gone with the wind

2) The day my bum went psycho

Using those titles, both valid, and joking aside ...... I think most people would not make the association between the photo and a book they had never heard of as easily, and thus might mark accordingly (even if subconsciously).

Other people's thoughts?

I hope that we don't see shots where a book is the subject. Look here's my school books or something like that. Please be creative on this one.

Obviously though a photo of a library would be ok. It wouldn't actually show the books, just the building.

That's within the challenge isn't it?????

;)

Just "old" entries ... and the "finished" image

Well, I was ready to post a comment about how if the subject of the photo didn't match up with the story or subject of the book, I might not score it as high. But thanks to all of you, I've seen the light! :) I went back and re-read the details, and agree that it's very clear that the photo doesn't have to have anything to do with the book, just a suitable title that happens to be a book title as well.

Common sense says that you're going to have a better chance of getting a possitive response from the voters if you pick a book that is at least somewhat well known. With the magazine cover challenge, some included a web site address for their magazine - maybe including the ISBN for lesser known books would make them easier to verify? Of course, if it's available on Amazon, so long as you spell your photo's title right, searching for that on Amazon ought to be as easy (maybe easier?) than the ISBN...
