I recently lost my G2 (long story), so now I'm left without a digital camera. I bought a 300D but returned it because I do not want to have to step back and sort of re-learn taking shots with that camera without having a backup for trips and so forth. I'll eventually get around to buying a digital SLR, just not right now.

So I'm picking between a Powershot G3 and G5 and I'm not sure because I've read some nasty reviews of the G5, and in particular, the noise even at ISO 50 and 100. Most G5 critics suggest buying the G3 instead. Before suggesting I get another camera, I really love the Gx line and I've had no problems with the G1 or the G2 in the past (the G2 last two years without so much as a stuck pixel).

But I don't want to pay $600+ for the G5 if I can get a better quality camera (with a fairly insignificant loss of MP) fort $581 on eBay, which includes a 128 CF card, a nice case (I guess), and a CF reader.

So what do you guys and girls think?

If you want to suggest a 4.0 MP camera that's not a Powershot G3 or G5, I'm somewhat open to suggestions, but I'm somewhat financially embarrassed right now and while I need a camera badly, I don't need a really expensive one. Any help is appreciated!!

If you don´t whant a SLR model, exists other impressive cameras for you. Nikon Coolpix 5000 and 5400 both has 3x Zoom and are good choices. Reliable and precise cameras. But if you want to save money a great Sony DSC-P717 costs about U$600 as two Nikon, and has 5MP excellent image quality. Full of special resources and as realiable as all other prosumer cameras.
Really I know the Canon lens, it must be reviewed. But it will improve more power into the SLR models. I really beleave that this models are so powerfull as a G5 or more.

PS: I´ll never to change some EOS-300D! An great and cheap SLR camera.

I had a G5 before my 300D. I wished I had bought the G3. If I couldn't afford the 300D I would have went for a Nikon or Fuji.

I'm selling a G2, plus a lot of gear.

//www.pbase.com/gordonmcgregor/g2 for more info.

I'll consider any sensible offers.

i have the G3 - it rocks. as far as i understand, the only advances in the G5 are that it is 5MP instead of four, and that it is black. i might have seen something about it having a longer shutter speed option, 30 up from 15 seconds, but that, to my knowledge, would be the extent of it. i just recently bought my G3, and i got it over the G5 because it was essentially the same camera for hundreds of dollars less.

I have a G5 and I really like it. It's by no means equivalent to an SLR, but neither is the G3 or any of the other "pro-sumer" cameras.

You should be able to find the G5 for less than $600, but I think the G3 would be nearly as good of a choice.

I looked at the Nikons, but found the many of the functions I wanted quick access to were buried in menus on the Nikon cameras, but were easily accessible on the Canons.

You might also consider the Oly 5050 or the new Oly 5060. Don't know much about the prices on those.

My advice is to go to a store and play with them all. take a CF card and shoot some pics on all the cameras, take them home, see what the differeences are. See how they feel in your hand, how they work hands on.

I think the OP mentioned that they had already tried one and was looking for alternatives.
