A request to people who want to reply if there has been a comment on their photo.

I often get back a comment thanking me for my comment, or telling me something more about the photo. All such feedback on my comments is very welcome :)

However .....

Can people please try and remember that when people vote and leave comments they have no idea who the photo belongs to.

If I get a message back saying "Thanks for the comment. I managed that lighting by setting fire to my cat and using the shadows from the flames for effect" I have no idea at all what photo it relates to. I can't even see the comment I made.

If people can say something simple so the person can work out which photo it is about, as the commenter may have left a bunch of comments, it makes life sooo much easier :)

Not a rant, just a suggestion so commenters can refer your reply to the relevant photo (especially important if a question was asked and you may go and up their score because of the answer).

:)

technically you shouldn't reply during the challenge as it removes the anonymity. Upping the score after an explanation would be a breach in the spirit on the rules.

Also not a rant...just a fact :)

edit: doofus typo on my part

OK, this is a double edged sword. Some people think it's not OK to reply to comments during a challenge, but some will actually consider it rude when you do not reply to them, so go figure.

And there is not a real legal rule written on DPC about replying during a challenge. I know it removes the anonimity, but if the comments asks a question because the viewer did not understand something, I think it is OK to clarify for the viewer.

Not always it is the photographer's fault that people do not understand things. Remember DPC has people from all over the world.

I will reply during the challenge only if the commenter asks a question. I prefer to remain anonymous until the challenge is over.

Even then, I will usually reply to comments with comments of my own, thanking everyone for their feedback.

Good points here in this thread. I understand several of the positions and the apparent dilemna. However.....

1. As a courtesy, I attempt to always reply with a thank you.
2. I really do appreciate the fact that a person took the time and effort to comment.
3. I keep my reply generic, without reference to any content, to insure anonymity of which picture comment was being replied to, out of fairness to the voting process.
4. My intent is 2-fold, a) thank the commenter and b) hopefully encourage the commenter to comment on more photos, due to the appreciation of their sincerity and effort.
5. After the challenge is ended, then the commenter can re-read their comments/picture and conclude for themselves the merits.

I say this only because, it was some of you that took the time to reply to my previous comments on your photos, and that effort on your part, has encouraged me to leave more comments and deliberate longer on submissions.

Flash, although I understand the desire to be grateful, that can be very annoying. During a recent challenge, I decided that I was going to go gung-ho and comment on as many pictures as I could. The next day, my inbox had a handful of "Thanks for your comment" messages. Granted it was easy to go through the 5 or 6 e-mails and it's nice to know your effort was aappreciated, but if everyone did that, then there would be hundreds of thank you e-mails in our inboxes. URGH!!!

Simply marking the comment helpful is thanks enough.

This is a call to the sysop on this important thread.

Anonymity is important. Why not allow anonymous replies to be made in the context of the photo (with the photographer just being identified as "photographer"?

Of course, on the other hand, this could be abused. Someone could reply and put their name in the reply text.

Anonymity is a "guideline" and not a "rule" as such. No one get's a DQ for accidentally posting a link to their photo. Some members share photos (or photo shoots -- when there's 3-4 members in one family you have to share).

When someone leaves a comment like "I don't see what you were trying to do here" it is fine to reply with explanatory comments.

If someone leaves you a note like "bad crop -- 4" it is considered bad form to write "John -- how could you give me a 4 for ...! -- Al" (names obviously generic examples).

See my entry for Grace for a nice example of this problem. I replied to the one person who specifically asked for one, and they did reconsider their vote. If you want, I can post the contents of that reply to show what I consider "explanation" and not "lobbying."

If this site is supposed to be educational, I think the more communication about photos the better. I personally would still like the photographer's additional info notes to display during the voting -- that would eliminate a lot of this.

I'd also see a "PM Button" right there under the commenter's camera so one can reply while bypassing the profile page of someone familiar.

This is my opinion. I'm sure there are others ...

I too reply when there is a question or possible misconception. These are great ideas. I'd like to see them implemented also.

I fully agree. I would not reply to a comment unless they specifically ask a question. I wouldn't lobby for better score. I think that would have just the opposite effect. Anonimity is preferable, but the communication is important as well if it helps both sides.

keep in mind too that some people think it's rude if you DO reply to their comments... so i guess it varies from person to person. personally, i like it if someone repliees to my comments... as for the anonymity, what i usually do is if i want to respond to the comments, i put my own reply on the photo after the challenge is over.. but i'm sure most people dont' look at it again
