I had a thought. What if each month there was a week-long challenge: "January Calendar Image", "February Calendar Image", and so on? Then at the end of the year the blue-ribbon winners could be compiled into a 2008 DPC calendar? I don't know what kinds of rights issues would be involved. It just sounded kind of fun.

That's a very good idea!

Edit to add that if the Blue Ribbon winner didn't want to participate in the calendar, the honor would go to the next ribbon winner, and so on down until someone agreed.

Could do it from the Monthly Free studies. Anyway, this will require a little work from the winners to get a hi-res photo to Langdon (or whoever) for the prints.

Ah, but Rachel's suggestion is to have it themed for that month - no guarantee a Free Study ribboner would be a "January" type shot, for example.

Yeah, BUT January where you are is a heck of a lot different from January where Sherpet is, to name just two opposites. Since we have members in the extreme latitudes, the temperate latitudes, and the tropics on BOTH sides of the equator, I don't think a 'weather themed" calendar would work especially well :-)

Just making a DPC calendar off the monthly Free Study winners seems like an excellent idea. Do bear in mind, however, that in order for the calendar to be commercially viable it needs to be published in October, at the latest, and preferably earlier; so the cutoff dates would be like September 2006 through August 2007 for the 2008 calendar, something like that.

Monthly themes don't have to be weather related. They can be holiday related, such as Valentine's Day in February, for instance. Or some other holiday with which I'm not familiar in some other part of the world. That would make it pretty cool, in my opinion. Just thoughts - I'm sure a calendar of the monthly free study winners would be cool, too.

what a cool idea. Not sure you can get the winners to agree but a very cool idea and I would buy the calendar too! We could send then to friends and family as gifts as to what this site is all about.

Make the agreement to allow printing of the photo in the DPC calender an "extra rule" for each of the challenges.

Basically say - don't enter unless you agree that DPC can use your image in a 2008 calender that is available for sale to the general public.

Robert's point about the fact that it wouldn't be available until 2008 was about to begin was the biggest problem I saw with my own idea. Most people buy calendars in the fall, and by December they're all on markdown. So maybe it's an idea that would take more planning ahead than to start it this month.

Re: the different climates in the different hemispheres: I don't see that as much of a problem. If someone takes a fabulous beach photograph in Australia for January and it wins, then it's in the calendar and it's a welcome bit of cultural education for those of us in the northern hemisphere who think Christmas=snow. :)

Also, you know how some calendars have smaller images mixed in with the number squares in the lower portion? That could be utilized well in a situation like this, I would think.

Anyway, it was just an idea. Glad to see some response to it and I think it would be really fun.

Rachel (haven't been participating in challenges lately but still read the forums and check out results etc. on a daily basis).

Robert's surely correct about the timing... interestingly, we started the monthly Free Studies in August, so by July, we'll have 12 months worth :-)
It could be arranged to run from July to July, with a month to get squared away on which images.
Perhaps the top ten images from each month could be ranked for the calendar by the voters. Sometimes, the best overall image isn't the best for a calendar.
