What jfriesen said. Go for the used market. There are billions of canon owners out there who just upgraded for Xmas and there are lots of used 20 and 30Ds on the market now. Sweet deals to be had....

If you're not going to go for the the full frame 5D then you should also consider the Nikon D200.....but I'm bias!

I'm gonna chime in here with a related question, as I'm only a few weeks away from ordering myself a 30D - or at least seriously considering it. I know I want one, my concern is that I'll buy it, and 3 months later, Canon will release an upgrade, or a something like a "40D". What are the odds of this - should I wait, or just go for it?

There will always be "the next thing," sometimes sooner, sometimes later. That should never be a deciding factor on when you purchase, if you're ready to purchase.

Oh, I know there will always be a next thing. I just don't want it to come out 3 weeks after I make a choice! And while it's not a deciding factor, it's taken me almost two years to save enough for an upgrade, and I'd hate to buy the 30D only to then have something new immediatly appear that offered extra features that I wanted.

I guess that maybe what I'm really asking is this: I know Canon has a release schedule which people can sort of track - are we approaching a release date, or is it still well in the future?

Yeah, but then I'd need new glass, too ;-)

Some time in the last couple of days or so I read somewhere - Flickr perhaps - that a 40d was going to be announced shortly. Shall try and remember where - probably just vague rumours, 'though.

I read something regarding Canon releasing new cameras Feb/Mar 07. I've had my 20D for 1 1/2 years and love the camera. I wouldn't upgrade unless the improvements on the camera were substantial. If waiting until the new Canon's is an option, I'd wait.

The Canon XTI is a 10 MP camera and has some great features. You already have the 350...with some glass.

Personlly I think Nikon really has the upper hand with the N80 and N200. If you haven't bought glass this might be worth considering.

If you can remember where you saw it, I'd love to see :-)

@Thorlo: I really considered the new 400D, but I have big hands, and it's just not comfortable to hold. The 30D is the perfect size, and I love it's features. The only thing I can think of really wanting in a "40D" would be the anti-dust tech from the 400D. But that begs the question, does it even work, or is it just fluff?

With the amount of glass I've aquired in the past year, switching systems just isn't an option - even if Nikon is ahead. Maybe we'll get lucky and Canon will catch up soon.

That's funny, you can see someone swapped the 3 to a 4 in the image. [Edit: OK they go on to admit that]. And by the way, it's not 101MP like the link would suggest!

I would wait (am waiting) until the next thing comes out. But that's me.

In my mind, this becomes a very important consideration only when you are seriously considering the used market. When Canon introduces the 40D (or whatever), the market will be saturated with used 20 and 30D bodies, making some sweet deals available for the taking. If you're committed to buying new, you'll also get a price cut if you buy the older model, but you'll hate yourself for not getting the new whiz-bang features that whatever new model will be trumpeting.

That would be 10.1MP. BUit I am not saying it is true. I just done a Google search for "40D" and that is thew first link that popped up. I don;t believe any of these leaks ever.

It would be reasonable to believe that the 40D would be on par or better than the XTi in terms of resolution.

I'm in exactly the same boat with the exact same worry, but looking at it I've had my 350D for over a year and never had dust on the sensor so really it's no big deal. My 30D arrives tomorrow morning!
I'm excited, put it that way.

I don't think the difference between 8MP and 10MP (30D to assumed 40D) is that big a deal unless you are more worried about the numbers than the photography. I cannot imagine any photography that could be done on a 40D that couldn't be done on a 30D. On the other hand, there is photography that you may be missing while waiting to buy a dSLR. Buy your camera and then don't look at DPReview for 6 months :-)

Concerning the theorized 10Mp sensor, I've heard a few reports from 400D users that the quality isn't up to par with the older 8MP sensors - something about the extra MPs being jammed in there but having less or poorer resolution somehow. Not sure how true that is, but IMO, there isn't a whole lot you can do with 10MP that you can't do with 8MP.

I think I'm just gonna' do it. I have most of the funding gathered, I just have to take the jump.
