If it's just the interface causing you problems ... Gimpshop ... the Gimp made to work like Photoshop.

I don't think you will find Photoshop much more friendly. Well, maybe a little, but for the most part Photoshop CAN be as daunting for even basic tasks. Photoshop Elements is a little easier.

Gimp does fail in some aspects, compared to Photoshop. Most notably it's lack of adjustment layers.

Google Gimp Tutorials and play around with it.

If you go to //www.gimp.org/tutorials/ it has some tutorials on how to use GIMP for photo editing. GIMP can do a lot of the same things that Photoshop can do...it just does them in a different way. If you are familiar and comfortable with Photoshop and can afford Photoshop I would say go for it. There is a lot of information out there geared for Photoshop. (Not to mention plug-ins etc). The two reasons I haven't gone to Photoshop is my level of knowledge (my post imaging is really basic) and the price.

Thanks bod btw for the link to Gimpshop. Definitely going to have to check that out.

Like any powerful tool, you need to take the time to learn how to use it. I use it for lots of various effects like borders, collages, and adding / removing objects from pictures.

Take your time, google for some tutorials, and before you know it, your an expert.

Yep, and it's not even 3D yet, wait till you get your hands on tools like Max or Maya, 2D is a walk in the park compared ;)

I use the GIMP exclusively ('cause I'm just too durned cheap to shill out for PS) and I've found this site to be very helpful:

Grokking the GIMP

It's pretty much the GIMP 'bible', and it's all online and free to use.

Your best bet to figure it out, though, is just to use it. Play with it. See what happens when you do such and such and take notes while you do! That way you can figure out how to do the things you want, and you'll have the notes so you can do them again three weeks later instead of going 'now how did I do that?'. (And yes, this is experience talking!)

Best of luck!

I use the Gimp because 1. I am too cheap to buy Photoshop and 2. Now that I have used it enough, I prefer it over photoshop (easier for me to use).

Here is a tutorial on how to do some post processing in Gimp for wedding photos: tutorialgeek.blogspot.com/2010/12/wedding-photo-enhancement-using-gimp.html
