Hey guyyyyys!! This is not photography related, but I know that for many of you here photography is just a hobby and you have a different career. Are any of you in the Psychology field? I am nearing the end of my general education and I am lookin' to transfer to a different University for my upper division classes. I'm open to goin' anywhere!!! I want to major in psychology, with a focus in child developmental psychology. What school did you attend? Why did you like their Psychology program? What is your career now? THANKS SOOOO MUCH :o) :o) :o)

No. I actually would like to work with children who are recovering from traumatic events/experiences. I am not completely positive what my career will be. I will let that part of it unfold as time goes on :)

I'm just asking because the majority of psych majors with focus on childhood development end up as guidance counselors because of the lack of work. This is just from what I've read, I don't have real knowledge.

And I applaud what you want to do.

thanks for the input!! it is something i am very passionate about and i will not let the "lack of work" thing interfere. i have no doubt that something will come along... if not, i'll start a program of my own.

Look into the Psychology and Educational Psychology programs at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Hubby has a Ph.D. in Ed. Psy. from U of I.

Hey Shanny..

My education is in Social Work.. (focus for most of my career in that field was with street kids (prostitution) or kids in the system) .. anyway.. I would highly recommend that you figure out where your passions are (which it seems you have)
then start researching the types of careers you can have that would include that passion.. (which I think you are trying to do now)

then what I would suggest is that you contact some of those places, set up meetings or start some correspondence with people who are doing what you think you might enjoy.

I've learned over the years that people are typically willing and quite happy to talk about their career paths and how they got there if someone is seriously interested. They will be able to tell you the ups and downs of what they do.. (from their perspective and of course take it with a grain of salt because the beauty of being human is that we are all unique and each experience will be different for each of us)

But then you get it straight from someone who is living it. Its how I was able to research a number of paths that interested me and it opened a lot of doors that otherwise might not have been opened.

:) good luck

thank you shecoya!!! :) :) i really appreciate the advice!! what you said is very very important... especially for me, because i tend to beautify things and sometimes ignore the somewhat undesirable aspects. i know it's important to think positively an optimistic, but at the same time its crucial to be knowledgable on what i am gettin' myself into. i may be PMing you soon with some in depth questions ;) thanks again~

The Institute of Child Development (ICD) at the University of Minnesota is top notch. I earned my PhD from the Psychology department there, but I met many of the folks from ICD and they are great people, on the front-lines of developmental work.
