I live in Chicago area for almost 16 years, but I haven't seen so many Lady Bugs like this month.
They are all over the place in millions.
I see them in parks, on cars, on window, landing om my shirt, what is going on?
Very strange!

Sure, and just because I would like to do a macro shot of one there aren't any around here at all!!

I hope it means a mild winter.

I didn't know this until recently, but lady bugs do migrate. (Hard to image, yes?) I've seen swarms that covered a three story building. Funny thing is, they don't seem to take the same path, stop at the same places, so one year they'll be all over a building, then not be seen there ever again (in such numbers).
Kosta - get a shot, you might never see this again!

Just today I've noticed the same thing here in Toronto, Canada. It's been cold lately, but today we had blasting 27 degrees Celsius - quite a heat day for October. And out of nowhere ladybugs swarm in hundreds. They bite too. And they smell so weird if you happen to injure them while brushing them off. Quite interesting.

I've noticed that the ladybugs come out in swarms when the farmers start harvesting the corn. When the farmers have a good year, then there are tons of ladybugs.

Lady bugs are clever little beasts, they are keen gardeners and photographers to boot.

Many of them frequent the DPC pages every day, scounring for lady bug images. It has come to their attention, that whilst every other bug in the universe crops up in the challenges, lady bugs are unlawfuly ignored.

So after a month long analysis of DPC users and their repective countrys, they deduced by fine claculations that Chicago held a 52% majority and thus on the 15th of Spetember 2003 cheif Walawala (the head of the lady bug race) orered a worldwide gathering of LB's to emigrate there and try be included in every shot.

We have the bugs that you are refering to here in the center of Michigan. If they bite they are NOT lady bugs but rather some kind of japanese beetle (at least that's what the newspapers around here called them last summer). They were around in DROVES last summer and I have seen many of them in just the last few days here!

When I was in Wisonsin last week one followed us in the car, and I let it hang out on my arm. This week our news said they are not lady bugs, they bite and cannot be killed by bug spray. These are slightly lighter in color than typical lady bugs. Lady bugs also don't bite.

you are correct. They are a breed of Asian beattles (not the ones from the UK, :) and ladybugs. They are yellowish-brown, they bite, and they stink like ladybugs!!

The traffic here in Chicago & burbs sucks!! But the Cubs don't - this year at least.

Bundle some up and send them to me. My garden loves them.
I hope you get some good shots of them.

ps. I didn't know ladybugs bite. They must have mistaken you for another bug.

Lady bugs don't bite - these in the midwest are a different strain that do bite.

It's funny to see this thread, just this afternoon a friend and I were talking about how many ladybugs there are this year, but that they aren't bright red ones that they are a pail yellowish orange...so there not even ladybugs huh? Now I find this out, after my two year old daughter was afraid of them and I went on and on about how they are just ladybugs and they won't hurt her....and now I find out that these bite!! (she's never going to believe anything I say again!! LOL)

We had them here last year real bad. They would get in your house and stuff. The bite hurt but only for a second. No allergic reaction that I noticed.

You're right they aren't bright red, almost a reddish orange or a dull red...

i know that ladybugs know when cold is coming - they sense it
and when they do they head for shelter for the cold months.
this is true.

they also know when the cold is over - can judge the seasons
so winter is coming - when you see them again - its over
by the numbers - could be its gonna be a cold one...

northern VT is no nicer than chicago ;}

WOW! The back of the museum where I work was swarming with these yesterday! I never saw so many "ladybugs" at once and wondered what was going on. Now I know they were beatles. I'll have to ask one of the entomologists for more information....

They killed some of my neighbors plants. They are very hungry!!
Why don't you come to Chicago and take some to go.

I'm not getting any shots of them. (a house that needs work, gonna start a second job, I'm never home, no high-speed internet, I need to clear our HD space on my computer). I'm hoping to maybe take pix in the spring!!

There are over 5,000 different ladybug species. Only the Mexican bean beetle and the squash ladybug can damage a plant or a crop. The rest of them are very welcomed as they feed on aphids, scales, and mites, soft bodied tiny insects. I managed to take pictures of some feeding.
