Are they supposed to be on a plain background like the examples you showed? Are they basic product photography shots?
Standard Procedure is a plain white background, a bedsheet would do, but good luck finding one big enough. You might need to go to a fabric store and buy raw cloth. Place the item 3-5 feet or so from the backdrop. Light with two lights, one at 45 degrees from the camera on each side, both slightly above the item and pointing down. Something like an outboard engine will have lots of nooks and crannies, so if you can beg, borrow, make, or rent some reflectors they would help out a lot... put them down low and angled up, also at a 30 to 45 degree angle.
For light, you'll want a lot of it. Again, if you can rent lights that would be great. If not, go pick up the brightest halogen work lights you can get at your local home improvement store.
