What would the best bet be for a beginner? I mean, there is PhotoShop, Elements and many other types of software out there. Right now I use PhotoStudio that came with my Rebel XT. It's pretty much a learn as you go thing. I would like to have more options (with instructions!)but not go to far over my head right now. I can't draw, can't paint, can't sculpt, but I can take a picture and I love being creative with post processing :)

PhotoShop is pretty pricey and has a high learning curve. I would start with PS Elements. It has all you need for DPC and web viewing and printing to a local printer. There are many good 3rd party books out there for PhtotShop and Elements.

Good luck!

Any particular version of Elements? I believe I heard a new one is coming out. Should I wait for that?

Thanks,

Photoshop Elements 5.0 is all you really need as a beginner, at $89.99 compared to Photoshop CS2 at $500+

Well GIMP is free (GNU Image Manipulation Program) and great, acts just like photoshop. I'd say when you master GIMP and want something more powerful, then drop the money on adobe products.

I use gimp 100% of the time and love it!

Another option is Gimpshop. I don't have the URL but if you Google it you'll find it. Essentially it's GIMP but with similar menus to Photoshop. That way if you take the plunge later for PS, you'll sort of know the menus.

I reckon that Elements 5 would be a good purchase. The introduction of curves means that it's a strong contender at its price point. If I hadn't purchased version 4 recently I'd be buying it.

Flying just under the radar is PaintShop Pro. They're up to v10 now but i have been using v7 and earlier since before time began.

PsP has most of the same features and abilities as Adobe, is certainly a fraction of the price but it sounds hard for anything to beat GIMP's feature/price benefit
