My Grandmother, 98 years old, is passing. She has been in the nursing home for about five years and there has not been one day that she has been alone. My mother, two aunts, and my uncle and his wife take turns everyday. Feeding her breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Sitting by her side, comforting her, reading the Bible to her (she loved to read the Bible), and playing gospel songs on the radio for her.
We have watched her go down hill for years now and have been preparing ourselves for the day. But when it gets close no matter how much preparing you have done it doesn’t ease the pain of loosing a love one. My Grandmother was always the woman that had the time to listen when you need an ear. She gave advice wisely and I never heard her use her tongue as a sword.
She is a devoted Christian that loved the Lord. She never pushed it upon anyone but had a way of letting her values be seen and heard. My mother told me she use to read the Bible out load at nights while the children played. Just loud enough that they could hear so they could have a choice in live when they grew up. It seemed to work as two of her sons became preachers.
She was born a daughter of a preacher man and married my grandfather in 1921. They had nine children. She out lived her parents, husband, and four of her children. I can honestly say that I am blessed to be her grandchild. And I hope I have made her proud.
A little over a year ago my mother was at the nursing home taking care of my Grandmother. She had just finished feeding and taking care of her. While rubbing my Grandmothers head, my mother felt compelled to write the following poem. It is from my Grandmothers perspective and my mother says the words just seem to write themselves on the paper. I guess it was my grandmother’s way of thanking my mother and others for taking care of her for so long.
My Mothers message to her children
My mind is not what it used to be,
My eyes are dim where I cannot see.
My hearing has become very faint,
I try to speak but I can’t.
But in my mind I talk to you,
And I know everything your do.
If you only knew the prayers I pray,
That God will help you everyday.
I know the love you have for me,
You show it everyday – you see.
You have stayed right by my side,
I’ve even heard the tears you cried.
One day God will call me home,
I will have to leave you all alone.
I’ll wait in Heaven patiently,
Until your loving face I see.

God only knows when she will leave this world but until then please, if you can find it in your heart, say a prayer for her.

We should all have a devoted family to look in on us in our later years.
The memories need be remembered and passed down to future generations too, as that is all we really leave behind.

certainly... sounds like a life well lived. may her journey home be marked with dignity and free of pain...

It sounds like you and your wonderful family are part of an amazing legacy she has given this world. All of you will be in our thoughts and in our prayers. ((hugs))

Scott I lost my last grandparent many years ago, before my son was even born. I know what your going through and I'll say a prayer for you and your family tonight. I hope that if she does pass she does so peacefully and her loved ones are with her when she crosses over to meet those that have gone before her.

It is with a heavy heart and tears of sadness along with joy to announce that my Grandmother passed tonight a 8:00 pm est. The tears of sadness is because we didn't want her to go, but the tears of joy is that I know she is basking in the presence of Jesus. May the Heavenly Angels sing as my devoted grandmother enters the kingdom of God.

Scott, there are no words I can say that will diminish the pain of loss you are presently feeling. All I can say is that it was truly heartwarming to feel the love that binds your family together, and how your faith guides you through these difficult times.
Yours is the type of family bond we should all strive to emulate. My thoughts are with you and yours.
