I think we've all seen these types of shots occasionally. Where there is no solid subject, or strong focus point, but the image just comes together as a whole, and works. Try your best at producing this type of photo this week.

Can you show any examples? It sounds like it could be interesting but I'm not sure I know what you have in mind.

We actually discussed "Landscapes Without Subject" at some length on the Landscape Learning Thread. This would be an example:

Is something like this what you're picturing? A bit more editing than would be allowed in a challenge though. But, I like the idea :)

Would something like this qualify?

this shot isn't great but:

In ralphnevs shot posted above by glad2badad, I find my attention actually drawn strongly to the bright stripe and the windows. Bear's and kteach examples are right on, for what I'm thinking. In fact, I was thinking of this due to a painting I saw at a gallery in Owosso of a field of wild flowers. It was beautiful and incredible detail. In fact took first place in their 13th annual all media juried competition.

Surface of a pond just before sunset.

I think this qualifies as subjectless?

These are all interesting examples. I'm especially partial to the pond scum shot :-)

Yeah, for sure! I really like the shadows in this and all the leaves and debris scattered about on the surface.

I think ralphnev qualifies because two separate items compete for attention. This would be a great challenge, btw, and comes close to my interpretation of the zen challenge.

Oops. I thought you were talking about a strong single subject and the lack thereof for your challenge suggestion. Didn't know multiple focus points wouldn't work. Guess you are looking for zero focus points period?

Good to get that clarified up front - eh? ;^)

Like this from the Zen challenge?

Is this one, or would the clouds be the subject?

Don't bother, he only wants pictures without Loki... (or is that loci?)

So it would be a shot where the eye basically strolls around the whole shot, maybe stopping here and there for a closer look but not finding any one spot that holds it, yet is satisfied with the lack of single focal point?

The word loci is the plural word for locus which in latin means "place"

The dictionary says Locus is:

1.A locality; a place.

2. A center or focus of great activity or intense concentration: “the cunning exploitation of loci of power; the insulation from normal American society” (Clifton Fadiman).

3. Mathematics. The set or configuration of all points whose coordinates satisfy a single equation or one or more algebraic conditions.

4. The position that a given gene occupies on a chromosome.

LOKI is the nordic Demi-God of Mischief.

And I suspect Posthumous was having a bit of Loki-like mischief with his bad play on words ;)

BeeCee suspects correctly. Look out for the loci of your foci... ;)

So the wording of the challenge description needs to assure us that we are trying to avoid locus focus, or loci foci - and never mind what mischievous Foki Loki tries to pull.

Darn that would be nice. I get comments on many of my images asking what is the subject. ;)
