Will the Nikon 50mm F1.8 MF work on the D50? Are manual lenses worth bothering with on DSLR cameras?
Cheers.

an AI AIs 50mm f/1.8 will work but on a D50 you have no metering so you can only check exposure via the histogram
they will meter on the D200(D80??)D2x but not D70* D100 D50...
if it is not AI(s) do not attach it to your camera as it will damage it

Yes, the lens will fit on the D50, but that's about it. You won't have metering. So unless you have an external lightmeter or take the 'trial-and-error' approach to exposure, then it's very limited.
The D200 and upwards supports metering for Nikon AI/AIS lenses. And I'm not sure about the new Nikon D80, which hasn't been released yet. |

How can I recognise whether it is a AI lens or not ?
I inherited a MF 50mm 1.2 and a MF 85mm 1.4 from the early 1980's (together with an F3) and those lenses seem to work fine on my D70 (yes, no metering, but I have a histogram or a separate light meter). I just love the shallow DOF of those lenses.

Ahh...thanks alot for that ralphnev/jhonan. I was browsing around Ebay and noticed a few MF lenses that were advertised for the D50/D70. I just wanted to find out if they would ever be worth bidding on.

There is something called AI/S P. This means manual focus lens, but with a chip on it, so you get full metering with it on a D50/D70. I know of only one lens like this, thoug, the pancake 45mm f/2.8 (are there other P lenses?). Supposedly a very good lens, too, see here
Another available option is to chip AI/S lenses. There is this guy who charges about $100 for chipping selected manual focus lenses. Not worth for cheap lenses, but if I had the MF 50/1.2 and 85/1.4, I would definitely do it. |
