Hubby and I want to check out Alaska in August.
We’ll be flying into Anchorage and spending 5 days.
We are on a budget, so the 5 star hotels and joy flights are out :-(

I am looking for suggestions and warnings.

Should we hire a car for the whole time?
What about other options like train or ferry?
What are the MUST SEE places? What is overrated?

Any advice will be much appreciated, thank you.

One of the awesome things about AK is it is legal to camp ANYWHERE
so if your budget is short consider car camping and save your $ for fun stuff. There are some neat wildlife watching ferries out of Seward and Homer to the west is a beautiful town. The Wagonwheel Inn (homer)is very homey and the views are spectacular. Denali NP is a bit far off for such a short trip but it is do-able. Prepare for rain, but have some warm things just in case as it can snow at that time of the year. I have been twice in August and it rained most of both trips.

Drive to Homer. You won't be disappointed. Be sure to check out the Spit and surrounding areas. Around Anchorage, Flattop Mountain has a wonderful hiking trail with lots of photo opportunities (and possibly ripe blueberries). If you do hike it, there is a bench about half way up - nice place to rest and it has a tremendous view of the valley below. It was built last summer in memory of John Michaud, a mountaineer and musician from the area. The hotels there are pretty expensive - regardless of rating. You might do better in B&B's.

We were in Homer last August (early - first week or so) during the Silver Salmon run. It was awesome!!! My son worked as a deck hand on a halibut charter all summer and lived in a tent on the spit.

i drove to alaska in 99. amazing.

there is a glacier... well several... but one outside anchorage you can hike on. i got the most amazing shots... pre-digital. but learned don't make noise on a glacier --- ice breaks.

right about now you should have 24 hours sunlight. it was amazing. i think about the place often. if it wasn't for the 6 months darkness, i'd move there.

There are two universities in Anchorage - The University of Alaska - Anchorage and I think the other one is called Alaska Pacific University. It's a beautiful place. I can't wait to go back someday.

Thanks for the idea, Laurie.
Thanks for the link, Danny - some lovely images there!!!!
I'll keep them in mind, Patsy, thanks.
Good luck, Linda - Homer sounds like a stunning place (I hope we'll make it down there, but I doubt it.... not enough time *sigh*).

I've just come back from a trip to Alaska. Denali National Park was one of our highlights. If you do make it there, take one of the buses and make sure you get off and hike. I was amazed how many people just went for the bus ride and never got off. You can tell the driver at any time to get off and then just flag down the next bus (assuming they have room) for your next ride. It was magical!

Absolutely awesome images. These certainly help my decision making process... I can see a trip to Alaska in the near future.

Thank you ever so much for sharing.
