I just bought NI and am learning how to use it. I notice that when adjusting the noise filter settings there is also a setting for "sharpness." The question is: Does anyone have any experience using the sharpening feature within NI? Does it do a good job? Or do you stick with unsharp mask for your sharpening needs? Or do you use NI sharpening while removing noise, and then still use USM later?

USM should be the last step in workflow.

I usually do the least I can with NI, it tends to get a bit chunky if you start setting things too high or try to sharpen also.

Course, you can always clone a billion chunky dots later, but then what's the point of NI?

Stick with USM, IMO.

I sometimes use the sharpening in NI, but only to keep the image from appearing too soft or blurry looking. You should read what the Neat Image site has to say about the feature. I use NI fairly early in my workflow, and if I use it's sharpening, that is never the final sharpening of an imsge.

I'm with coolhar on this one... I use a moderate amount of sharpening depending on the noise. The sharpening is not used to sharpen the image. It is used to keep the image from getting too soft.

It's supposed to work well with the noise reduction feature, so I use it to counteract the softness it introduces.

I also use sharpening later on.

I have actually been using the sharpening instead/and with USM. You can set it just the same as USM (I usually have the radius .6 or below) and I usually drop the strength and smoothness real low and then just nudge it up to my preference. Get good results.
I have a Mac G with 2GB of RAM, so nothing clunky here. There is a new NI version out and a beta stand alone to play with also.

I sharpened with NI on this image

Thanks for all the great responses everyone. Very helpful.

And Dacrazyrn - That is an amazing photo. Hard to believe you can coax that much detail out of 150 kb.
