I have been wanting a specialty lens for a while. I really like the look of a fisheye. Do you think it is better to buy a cheapy first, to see if I'd really like it, or get a Canon lens the first time? The cheapy I'm looking at is here. http://auctions.overstock.com/item/26733875

I am probably leaning towards the cheap one now - $40 is not much to lose. I would expect to use it for landscapes, once or twice during weddings, etc. What do you think? If I would go for a more expensive one, what would you suggest - Sigma or Canon or other??

Thanks so much!!

You realize the one your looking at is an adadpter for your existing lenses, right?

It looks like it comes with 2 thread sizes, 52 & 58mm

Probably really poor quality--

Go for the Peleng. It's a Russian built thing (like a tank!) and the quality has been pretty good, given the feedback from people on DPC who own one (including yours truly).

Chop my arm off and you'll see canon written through my veins ;) IMHO you get what you pay for and a $40 lens won't get you much in quality terms, in fact it may put you off fisheye lenses forever.

That said I've not used a fisheye on a digital cam so can't really comment - am sure a more knowledgable fotog will be around soon with an answer (go canon go)

Hmmmm - OK, maybe it is a waste of $40....

i was lookin at a fish eye, then decided it was more of a gimmicky
thing, so i bought the
Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

its still pretty gimmicky and can't use it all the time, but it is
great to have.

I wanna know how much you have to crop off the Peleng?
Anyone have an original and a cropped version to share?

I would also like to know how easy it is to "defish" the image if you just wanted to use it for a super wide angle lens.

The image circle from the Peleng is about 24mm, so it's just a little larger than the long dimension of the sensor on the 10D, 20D, 30D. The corners are dark in the top (and bottom) 1/3 of the frame. Really not that much dark space at all. The easiest way to get a full-rectangle image is to partially defish, just enough to stretch the corners out. Works great.

Here are two version of the same shot with the Peleng on my 10D.
The first is the complete frame. Note the dark corners (actually the area needing crop or defish is a little larger than the black area... there's a bluish-hued area of image that also needs removal; it's the edge of the lens).
The second shot is partially defished using PanoTools. The settings were as follows:
Filters>PanoTools>Remap
- Convert From: Fisheye Hor.
- Convert to: Normal
- HFOV = 90°
- VFOV = 60°
The small values for FOV cause a partial defishing, just bringing the corners out far enough to eliminate the dark corners and other crud. Notice how the aspect ratio changes... that's because of the difference in mapping. Notice also that very little in the way of FoV has been lost :-)

I hope you don't mind but I am seriously considering buying one now. I took your image and cropped out what should be there.

I assume this was taken with the 10D you have so the 1.6 crop factor is still there. Looks ok to me and worth the $250 with shipping included.

Yep, with the 10D uncropped. I got mine from another DPCer for significantly less than $250 too. There seems to be a good used market out there for these, if you can find a trustworthy seller.

I own a fisheye and I kinda think they are a waste of money but occasionally fun to break out. IMHO, it's rare that you find a good or interesting use for one and usually nothing too original at that. Mine just sits there but something might strike me to put it to use.

Having said that, I'm glad I own one for the few times I got to use it, so far.

I think the Peleng is Circular(?) which I don't personally like so you may want to investigate that to see if it's really what you want.

The one I was looking at was new but I can wait and find one used for a little cheaper. I am in no rush.

BTW, this is the only challenge image I've shot with the Peleng:

I have recently purchased the Peleng 8mm, and what a fun lens it is. They can be had for 200 with shipping from a reliable source on Ebay. I'd go that route first. Well worth the money if you like the fisheye effect.

Are you sure? But you are such a good fisheye subject!

I like the Peleng - I take a lot of shots with mine. I seem to see 8mm shots more and more often. They are not all gimmicky shots.

So where do you buy the Peling? (and yeah I've googled and epinioned it). BH and Canogacamera don't carry them. Does anyone have one they want to sell?

There's a few available on eBay: Peleng.

Is this what you're talking about?
