She's taken up residence in my bathroom (in Edinburgh), doesn't seem to have a web, lives in one corner of the floor and scuttles out to kill and drag away carpet beetles (my flat has a beetle problem). Not very wary of people but hides for short periods if there's a lot of activity nearby.

I first assumed house spider, but i'm not so sure now - she's a bit larger than any i've seen (my estimate is the body is between 15 and 20mm long), and the markings are too distinctive. Going off other internet photos, markings seem similar to the Tegenaria Parietina but the same website suggests they are only really found in america. I understand spiders can be best identified by the arrangement of eyes, should be quite clear in this photo although i can't now find the spider lookup website i once used.

So, any arachnophiles about that can help me identify my new friend?

I would say it was a Tegenaria Parietina as well. Look for a small funnel web in a corner of the room. They like to spin small funnel webs to hide in when they are not gathering food. The Tegenaria Parietina has expanded itself throughout much of Europe so I would say your original guess would be right. Congratulations, it looks like it's a girl. The males have thinner abdomen and are slightly smaller. Cute specimen. Nice photo too. :)
