If you want sharp, Tamron 28-75 it is.

If you're doing a lot of indoor work, you'll need both the 2.8, and the flash.

teh 100 2.8 is sharp. The promaster...i have my doubts.

Try the tamron 24-135 SP 3.5-5.6. VERY VERY sharp. You'll cut yourself on the images so be careful. Sell the promaster.

the 28-75 is excellent, but 28 is not wide on a 1.6 crop camera. You could consider the sigma 17-50 2.8 or sigma 18-50 2.8 - these are the proper focal lengths for a 1.6 crop body (like the 28-75 on a film or FF body).

Flash wise - it won't make anything sharper. Check the sigma ED500DG super flash, about $220 and as powerful as the 580. slower refresh and less robust build but it works well.

Love my Tamron 28-75mm. It's very sharp. You can find some test shots here. All are handheld with no PP.

I loved that lens, I am still so ticked off that I broke it. I can't bring myself to remove it from my profile.

The Promaster is crap. I know that. I am amazed at the sharpness of the 100mm f/2.8 and the 50mm f/1.4 so I want something along those lines as far as sharpness is concerned.

I just wonder how much I'd really use the flash. A lens is way more exciting to buy ;-)

If you need the extra walkabout range, get the Tamron 24-135, all of their SP series lenses are equally sharp, and as good as those you mentioned.

I miss my lens :(

From your profile, I'd think you'd need something a bit wider. I just bought the new Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and I can recommend it, it's great and reasonably priced imho. The 580EX is nice, but I'd rather have a wideangle zoom than flash.

I guess I was just wanting a f/2.8...

So should I sacrifice the f-stop and gain distance?

A lens is more exciting until you suddenly neeeed a flash and you're screwed. ;)

Never mind...I found the lens you are talking about...it is for digital cameras only. I was looking at the film/digital lens section on B&H

Yah, f/2.8 only goes so far. It's a rock and a hard place. Ultimately, you have to make the call.

You'll probably be wanting a 70-200/300 sometime soon, so maybe the 28-75 is good for now. If you ever decide to do a wedding, get a flash immediately. And a Lightsphere II. You'll probably want one regardless, so just keep saving.
