I have been hanging around for a little while now and I have a couple of questions that I still have not found answers for. Any insight that someone could provide would be great.

1. Why is it that when I pull my account up on my computer at work I can see all of the thumbnails for all the photos but when I am at home some of them are not visible? I have allowed nudes so that isn't it and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the ones that don't show. I can click on the title and see the photo in its large form but some thumbnails just aren't showing up.

2. When reading the rules for the size of the photos I believe it says that a photo can not be longer/wider than 640 pixels, yet I see some which clearly look much larger than my photos which I have saved at the width/length of 640 pixels. Why are some of the photos bigger? Am I saving improperly?

3. Can anyone point me in the direction of a thread that tells me where I can find out how I should properly save things so that I don't loose so much detail in the compression? A current photo I have in a challenge doesn't look nearly as nice saved at the 150kb and pixel size compression.

Lastly, just let me thank all of those talented people out there who have inspired me with their creative photography and thank, in advance, all of those nice enough to respond to my questions.

1. You're probably using Norton Internet Suite or whatever it's called. Go into the adblocker and set it to allow dpchallenge.com

2.& 3. You've only got one finished entry and that 640. All the entries in challenges aren't longer than 640 on the longest side so I'm not sure which ones you're referring to. Take a look at this tutorial on resizing images for challenges. If you're not using Photoshop, let us know what you are using and we'll see if can help.

Norton Internet Security - yup, that could be it.

A while ago, I installed that as well as Norton's antivirus. The virus bit is doing fine, but the security part was a pain.
It blocked some, but not all, DPC thumbnails - isn't that odd?

I couldn't convince it to behave, so I got rid of it again.

Still scratching my head over the "some" part, though.

when saving in PS most people use the Save for Web option. THere is drop down menu on a right arrow on there that lest you choose compression by file size - pick 147k. compression will vary based on the image, but generally above 8 (or 70%) is fine.

Norton sucks. IMO anyway.
I got ZoneAlarm for firewall and virus. good stuff, works perfectly without being intrusive and is affordable.

Thank you all sooo much! The Norton issue is very weird but makes sense- I do have it and it does act funny with certain things - just so strange that it chooses some of the thumbnails and not others! I am saving as you mention in PS Elements so perhaps it is just my perception. I will try to see if I can find a photo that seemed larger and post it here. Again, thank you for your help!

As far as the large photos, are you talking about just challenge photos? Because I don't believe there is a size restriction on portfolio pics. Also, there have been a couple of challenges lately that they allowed 720 pix. (Textures IV and Self Portrait IV)

Also check out your monitor resolution. If it is set at 800x600 pixels, the images will appear bigger in size.

I think that your answers, to my size of the photos question, have helped me to figure out that it is probably a combination of things. I am betting that I have different settings between my home and work computers so I am remembering seeing photos at one size and they appear to be another size on the other computer. So between having different settings and my insistance on having this addictive website on at all times, on all of my computers, I deduct that am having perception problems. I may have seen one of the larger images as well and it could have thrown me. I knew if I finally asked I would get the answer. I tried really hard to search old threads before I made this post but now that I have, I feel much less confused! There are still many questions that pop into my head (such as - why are there always little wooden people, \"woodies\" they seem to be called, in every or almost every challenge?) I am sure that I will come up with many more questions and am appreciative that I am able to turn to such knowledgeable people for the answers to the inner workings of the enigmatic DPC!

Woodies are your real models, you can bend them the way you like!
