I personally find it hard to take photographs during the required
week and, annoyingly, have usually taken a relevant photograph in
the week or two beforehand.

I have M.S. and am often ill and so cannot go out and take
photographs every week.

It would be great if challenges did not require you to take the
photo within a time range - or at least if *some* of the challenges
did not.

I have been considering joining as a paid member, but all of the
member's challenges seem to be time constrained as well and so I do
not see the point, right now, I am afraid...

:(

We've had at least one challenge that did not have time constraints, though I believe that is the only one.

Are you able to do some "studio" set up shots. And I don't mean thousand dollar lighting, etc. There are some on here that can help you set up some lights, etc. fairly inexpensively. I know it's not the same as getting out and getting a shot, but it does help to improve your skills, at least.

Going on with this idea, I would like to see a challenge that highlights the important role people with disabilities play in our world.

I think the challenge organisers should notify you early (privately) of the challenge theme - it seems only fair to me. We could be missing out on some good shots! ;)

Just take it easy, when ever you can submit the photo,it is not requirement to participate in every challenge.
Quality is more important then quantity!

I regret to say that I have recieved one or more (I am not going to
say how many - if it is only one then that person will feel attacked,
but if it is more than one then it will look like it is not just the
opinion of one peron - I leave that to the reader's imagination)
abrupt (I won't say agressive - it was / they were not intended that
way, I am sure) private messages in respose to this question.

;-)

If there was a way to delete the question, like you can in other
website fora, I would. This ex- web and software developer and
tester finds that a pity. Gah - I should not have said that - it will
seem arrogant but was not intended that way. I suppose that if I say I
had to retire due to the M.S. it will seem like I am seeking pity.
Oh well...

I am sorry that it has upset people. It is, as they say, 'only a
game'... ;-)

People are saying that I am agressive when I say, truthfully,
that "I can see no right angles :)".

I am new here. I did not know that we were meant to comment on
every photo we vote for. I have not had a comment for every vote that I
have had. It took two hours or more to view and vote on all the
photo's in the last challenge *without* adding a comment to them all.
That is *another* reason why some of my comments were short and not
flowerily worded.

It often hurts to type so I don't use flowery words or pamper
people - I do not expect to be papmered in turn.

I say what I see/think/feel and that is how it is.

I can sometimes spend time to write more (like tonight - it is
04:30 here (when I started this reply and 05:00 now) and I have not
yet been able to sleep because of the pain
- not in my hands tonight, so I can type). I don't want or need any
pity or sympathy. I just want to be able to exhibit my photography
to the best of my ability. You guys are missing some shots that I
love due to the time slots - I would have entered this image:
//www.natalie.ourshack.org/Photos/natphotoblog/red-roof.jpg
for Seasonal Shots / Summer had I not taken it a couple of weeks ago,
before I got ill this latest time (M.S. comes and goes, for me).

I am investigating the ability to dictate to my computer...

Even then people might think I sound abrupt because I am ecconomical
with words. Typing exacerbates the M.S. fatigue.

As does photography, but I love that and get a great sense of
acheivement from it.

Just the sound of the shutter makes me smile however bad I feel.

My reason for posting this question originally was that I have a load
of great photos that I could enter for the Seasonal Shots challenge
(see above for the one I chose), but they were all taken over a week
ago because I have been really quite ill for a week or so.

I know I don't have to enter every week - I would just like to be able
to enter as many as possible for my own sense of acheivement.

Selfish? Maybe.

But it makes me feel a lot happier to be able to show people my work
and to get such lovely comments from people that can type more
easily...

Oh well. I apologise if I have upset anyone. I did not mean to.
I was only saying it as I saw it in comments and asking about the
likelihood of non-time-limited challenges.

I also apologise if this is at all rambling or repetitive. Another
symptom of M.S. for me (we all get it slightly differently) is reduced
concentration and a very flawed memory - another reason I tend to be
a woman of few words. I guess I will just not comment on photos at
all any more - but one PM did not like the fact that I
had not commented much, either! I cannot win.

I guess I can look forward to low scores from anyone I have upset...

;-)

Thank you to those of you who have answered so helpfully, and good
luck to you all in the challenges...

;-)

Natalie

Natalie, just ignore the a-holes that send you rude PM's. Don't reply to them.

I doubt that the admins will change the rules for you, because it's an important rule so that challenge entries are spontainious. But just participate when you can and don't feel you have to enter every challenge. When you get around to it, you do and when you don't, oh well, you don't... there's always next week. :)

Keep your "chin up" and keep participating. I like your "Desolation" entry! It's great!

I agree with Chris. I think he said it very well.

Another alternative may be that when you have a shot you think might have worked, post it in the forums and simply ask, "how would this have done in suchandsuch" challenge.

It should be an exception for great people like Natalie in case of photo dates!

No one knows which photo is your's when they vote -- let "them" be upset later when they discover they gave you an 8 or 9.

There is certainly a chance of another "no time constraints" challenge, but probably not on a regular basis. However, you are not alone in your frustration. For months I suspected Drew and Langdon had figured out a way to check my computer each week for my best photo, and then pick it as the topic for the NEXT week's challenge. It used to occur with about 80-90% frequency, but lately it has dropped to only 20-30% of the time. When I post my alternate "Desolation" entry and compare it with my actual entry you will see this is a continuing trend (see ...?).

Other people do this all the time! Or post it in the "Outtakes" thread ... the date won't matter there.

We're not meant to. Everyone comments on as few or as many as they wish to comment on. Oddly, it's often the case that those who complain most about receiving no comments leave very few themselves.

I'm sorry to hear about how the MS is affecting your ability to participate more often. That said, I'm not sure I agree either with introducing a lot more challenges with no time restraints or with the Admins sending you topic information ahead of time (though if they decide to do so, that's up to them, of course).

What would be good (IMO) would be to have additional challenges with longer time frames, such as fortnightly or monthly. These would run alongside the regular one week challenges.

Anyway, welcome welcome welcome. Ignore the nasties and just enjoy the site as you can!

Oooh! Good idea! Thanks. Expect a flood of such postings! ;-)

Ummm, if an illiterate yank might ask a stupid question...

... What's fortnightly? :)
08/20/2003 02:56:07 PM · #17
One fortnight = two weeks

My guess is that it's shortened from "fourteen-night" but I don't know that for sure.

fortnightly = biweekly

I agree that month long challenges would be beneficial :)

yup

[Middle English fourtenight, alteration of fourtene night, fourteen nights : Old English fowertne, fourteen; see kwetwer- in Indo-European Roots + Old English niht, night; see nokwt- in Indo-European Roots.]

I've had lots of people look at me blankly here in the US when I use terms that are standard in English. It isn't really quite the same as biweekly, as there isn't really a term 'biweek', though fortnightly is the same as biweekly. I guess there isn't an American English word that has the same meaning.

Kinda like bi-monthly which can be once every two months, or twice a month. Bi-weekly, then, I guess, be twice a week, or once every two weeks.

Gotta love the English (American or otherwise :-P) language.
08/20/2003 03:37:43 PM · #21
Twice per week is semi-weekly. Semi means one-half (think of two-piece trucks), as do demi and hemi, leading to the musical term "hemidemisemiquaver" for a 1/64th note (a quaver is already 1/8 of a "whole" note).

A great idea for a challenge would be photos of challenges or helps a disabled person might have. My daughter is wheelchair bound, and one sees the world quite differently from that perspective. It may make a good and enlightening challenge if we try to see the world from a disabled person's point of view and take our cameras along!
08/20/2003 04:39:34 PM · #23
I'm so sorry! I usually try and steer clear of words that are uniquely English English as opposed to American English or international English but fortnight seems to be one that is so ingrained I didn't even notice!

:D

Hang in there Natalie...

I'm physically challenged also, though not the extent you are.

I've set up a small corner "studio" that I can stand at or use from a sitting position.

I take may shots when I can. The next challenge, Monuments, probably won't have a submission from me. I don't go out a lot esp. when it's above 90. The meds I take make me susceptible to heat exhaustion.

If I get a chance to I will try for an entry, but it's doubtful.

Don't apologize for asking for what you want or need. If you don't nobody is gonna make sure you have it.
