After one visit to a low flying location last March I have caught the bug in a big way.
At the moment I shoot with a 20D with 70-200f2.8 IS. I need to get a bigger lens may be the 100-400 to get the rivets.
here are a few results

If you can have a go its great fun.

A 2x extender would suffice, I'd think. It's not like you're going to need f/2.8 outside in full sun.

But which lens do you use it with?
I have the 1.4X and am very happy using it with a 70-200 f/2.8IS. I did read tests though saying that the 1.4X is hot and the 2x is not.

There are some great shots there, where were you standing to take these.
I have the Canon 2X and while you do lose some quality i use it with the 70-200 f2.8IS and the images are perfectly useable. |

Same lens but I do find the images rather soft. I have tried using the lens at f11 when using the converter. I had this advice from this forum somewhere.

Very cool photos, especially when they wave! Some don't seem quite as sharp as you'd like to see, as I'm sure you know. A tele would just make it worse.
Unfortunately lowfly.net is only for UK. Anyone know of anything of the equivalent for the USA?

Excellent images, I have the 2x converter it makes a great paperweight. I have tried it on many sporting events in bright sunny days including surfing, rugby and atheletics with the same poor results there is no-way that a 2x converter with the 70-200 would give you quality images with a subject moving at that speed. The only good results I have with the 2x converter is with stationary birds.

Do you remember that scene in Top Gun when Maverick took on the instructors over the desert. There was some fantastic low flying through the valleys. It is a bit far for me to travel.
Anybody with contacts in the USAF ? :-)

I do know they have a bomb practice range not far away, but they use real bombs. It's probably not safe. It would yield some great photos if you wanted to risk your life. |
