I had the opportunity to see Champions on Ice this past weekend. These were the results. I had a lot of trouble because I didn't want to use my flash, and I find that the 800 ISO is very grainy on the 10D, or my 10D, at least, so I had to use neat image to remove a lot of the dot grain. Let me know what you think, and what I could do do make them better.

These are very good shots for someone just "watching" the show. You said you didn't want to use flash. I can see why..you would have likely bothered the skaters.

These are pretty good w/o the flash. A little grainy but not bad. Now we know why the pros use those $4000 really fast telephoto lenses!

I would pick a few of the best ones and touch them up a bit. Maybe a little neat image would help some.

Good shots and I hope you had fun.

I actually did use neat image, but thanks. I appreciate the comments. The first thing I do when I win a million dollars is buy the best canon (plus lenses) on the market. LOL

Wow, I'm jealous! Jealous that you got to see the show in the first place and even more so that you were down close enough to get these shots! Great work!

Amazing shots, very impressive. I can't wait for next fall, gonna stake out a bleacher for myself at the local rink and practice, thanks for the inspiration.

OH man, those are excellent! I'm a hug figure skating fan- sasha cohen is the fav in this house. Even with the tad bit of graininess that you couldn't help these are really good. I had fun looking at those.

You've done really well. I used to shoot artistic skating and I know it's not easy. The lighting is usually bad and as you mentioned you can't use a flash (I used to shoot competitions so I'd get killed if I fired a flash and someone fell over!). With these examples I shot at 800 iso as well and just tidied up as best I could with neat image.

absolutely splendid shooting, steph! as ken said, pick out a couple to really work up; try using various noise reduction methods until you find one that gives you the final image you want.

fwiw, these shots are more than good enough for a portfolio, or for whatever you want to do with them. you have the eye, and, in reality, you're not going to get better shots without better equipment, especially in the lens department.

keep on rockin!

These photos are awesome. I was a skater and I can tell that the flash can distract a lot the skaters..but I can also say that is a little bit difficult to find a good photographer to this kind of competitions. Do you have more photos from skating than you can post please?

Cheers for the comments! I'll go through and see what I can dig up! :) Will PM you when they're up! I don't do the skating jobs anymore. I've handballed them over to somebody else as I'm concentrating more on weddings and portraits!

I think you have done a splendid job with these photos... they look as good as I would expect to see from a 'pro'. These photos rock! Great job!!! I think you should be very proud of these images.

BTW - what lens were you using?

Hi atsxus,

Your photos look great. You have really caught some great motion and crisp images.

I've just shot the "2006 West Aus. Rollerskating Championships" and would love some comments...

Cheers Matthew

Great photos and congrats on the POTD too.

I'm a HUGE figure skating fan and I keep meaning to get to a show, but I haven't yet.

Sasha Cohen and Johnny Weir are my favorites. :)
