I guess my image was way to out of the box for most. However, I was indecisive as to whether to enter my image or not. I wanted to see whether most voters would pick up the "subtle" difference in my image. I wanted to see whether the DPC voter pays close attention to the image itself. We often complain about some images scoring higher when they clearly did not follow the rules of the challenge description. "Eye candy" scores high as some say. Well, I decided to enter eye candy, in a way, which clearly meets the challenge but might be too subtle for most. Technically I think it's a decent image and should stay above the 5s. For this challenge, I decided to throw my score out the window and not worry about raising my average vote received.

So what made this image an Odd Couple? A plug and an outlet make a "couple" IMHO. The challenge called for an odd one so one is grounded while the other isn't.

I could have made the title more obvious but decided not to. I didn't want to hit the voters over the head with my title so I settled for the simpler one. Here were my chosen title outtakes:

"Is that a third prong or are you just happy to see me?"
"And what exactly were you planning to do with that? Hmmmm?"
"Not tonight honey"

Anyway, for those who got it, thanks for paying attention :) Thanks too to those who left me comments. It was great reading comments about not getting it and then having them revised when they realized exactly what they were looking at ;) Now back to getting my average score to a 5.75 ;)

Setup:
Blue background created in PS.
Propped the outlet with a coke can while the plug is kept in shape with a thin wire that I cloned out.

I think if you're going to be subtle in your interpretation, then hitting people over the head with the title is sometimes a good idea -- I like your alternates a lot : )

I thought about that paul but decided otherwise so I can see if people paid attention ;)

I would name the image "wrong region" or something to bring out the differences. I noticed the differences while voting. Gave it a 9 by the way :)

Well, I'm glad you're willing to take the hit on your score to perform an experiment confirming what other research has shown: that you have less than five seconds to grab someone's attention when a web page loads ...

Right. I didn't want the title to "bind" my image. The image IMHO should stand alone. Titles are icings on the cake ;)

Gave it a good score .. but didn't need a hammer to the head to see the connection :)

Upside-down cake, since the voting page reformat moved the title under the photo ... you don't even need to see it until you go to vote.

The instant I viewed the this photograph I saw the connect (on in this case, non-connection). I thought it was a very nice set up and arranged in a way that people should see the two prong wall plug and the three prong cord. The lighting and color was great. I personally gave it a 7 because I seen no need for a title in this picture, IMO it stood on it's own.

I don't think I caught the connection when I voted. I think maybe I got a little tired trying to find the connection with some other photos when there wasn't any and my effort slipped. :(

Yep, I got the connection; I thought you didn't have earthed plugs in America (we do in Australia), so I assumed you had an import of some kind. ;-)

I don't think you could assume to much from the score regarding the "connection". IMHO it is an average image that scored an average score

Hmmmm ..... I feel really stupid not to have picked this up in voting... One consolation is that I still scored this one well, and definitely better than the averages.

I will take this as a kick in the pants, and pay more attention to photographs I don't get at first. Thanks for showing me the light...

I saw this during voting but still had a real hard time putting this into the challenge. I don't find it to be out of the box or anything. In fact, when thinking about the challenge I had thought about something similar and discarded it thinking it would be a subject that more than one person would enter and felt it didn't really meet the challenge in the end. A nice photo, but just fell short of the challenge in my opinion.

So IYO Chris, my image did not meet the challenge because they are not what you would think of as a couple? So in other words, shoes, bees, flowers are couples but somthing like this isn't? Hmmm... I think I'll have to disagree with you on this one ;)

Here's my thought process when I viewed your image:

"Oooh, blue! Pretty. Nice curves. Plug turned sideways? Won't fit like that...Oh, no ground on outlet. Won't fit. That's odd...Odd Couple. OK. Cool idea, but the winners will probably be more emotive, like shots with animals or people. Still neat. I'll give it a 7."

Hope that answers your question.

When did I comment that I thought "shoes, bees, flowers are couples"? Please do not put words in my mouth. I never said that - all I said was I thought this image - your image - in my opinion did not meet the challenge. I see it as a clever idea, but not an 'odd couple.'

Here's my thought process when I read this post:

"Huh? Asked for feedback. Didn't like it. Picked on Chris for something he didn't even say. Meannie. Oh...he winked. Still meannie;)"

ooops. i wasn't picking on chris ;) all i was saying is that when did a plug and an outlet didn't work out as a couple? that's all. i had a smiley at the end of my post too as you probably missed it :P anyway, just trying to nit pick on this one as obviously the concept of an odd couple varied greatly from one voter to the next which is completely normal and expected. like i mentioned, i'm not bummed about it as i saw it as an experiment so all is well.

all i was saying is that it's interesting how chris didn't see this as a "couple".

i guess "reading" as opposed to saying things are vastly different. one of the problems of the tech world we live in i suppose. you type something to mean something and sometimes it's misinterpreted. hey no harm done (i hope).

You've got that right. I saw your winking smilie and gave you one back. Usually when I say "meannie" it's accompanied by a playful poke in the ribs and a smile. Haven't figured out how to do this online:)

I didn't vote on this image. If I had, I'd awarded it a 3.

The only interest it carries, IMHO, is topicality. I see no other reason for taken this shot.

topicality. exactly because it was taken specifically for the challenge :)

I noticed the connection or lack there of as per the challenge in this photo right away. I, most time than not pay attention to the photo before voting.
