You went to a large store and the checkout girl didn't scan one of your items and you got it home before you realised?
This happened to me today. I went to Makkro (a large trade/public discount store) and put a DVD player/recorder in the trolley, valued at £180 ($260). I was buying quite a few things so the bill was high and I just passed over my card without thinking, had the items checked as usual at the door and packed it into the car. When I got home, I checked the bill and realised it wasn't on the bill and I hadn't paid for it.

I am just interested in what you would have done in those circumstances?

Go back and pay up. No question.

I'm sure I would just keep the item.
or maybe donate it to a charity?

If it was wal-mart, I would say keep it.

But, obviously if you post in a public forum, you already know what you should do... ;o)

To keep my spirit guide from evil spirits, and to keep my aura pure, and my concious clean, I would go back and pay up.

It's not yours yet.

I would have called the store manager, then brought it back.

This happened to my grandmother once, though the item was not worth more than $10. She took it back to pay for it and the store tried to accuse her of stealing the item. After that, she vowed to never return anything missed agian. She now feels that if they miss something it is their fault and they need to live with it.

Pauline,

As Brother Horse said, "It's not yours yet." Go pay the people, no question about it. Heck, if you checked the bill and found it had been scanned twice, you'd want your money back wouldn't you?

Go back with receipt and item and pay for it...not even a moment of hesitation.

We have this saying in America

"YATZEE"

Oh come on you all know I'm kidding. Do what your mother tells you and go back and pay for it. But, watch a movie first!

hmmm, if it wasless (under £50) I'd keep it, the shop would account for loss in their pricing structure, and it was the stores fault for not scanning it. But given it's £180 worth of goods, I'd say take it back.

If it were a mom and pop shop I'd take it back no question. With a big box reailer I'd be inclined to keep it or, better, donate the cost of the DVD player to charity. Big companies like Wal-Mart make huge bucks off treating everyone but their customers like sh*t, so I wouldn't feel bad.

honesty is the best policy

OK it's 8 in favour of taking it back, 3 who would keep it and one who would keep it if it was Walmart!!!

Interesting!

In fact I phoned directly I realised and paid for it over the phone as the store is 30 miles away from home. What made me ask was that the store were surprised I was being honest and I just thought I'd canvass opinion to see if this was out of the normal way of behaviour - or maybe on DPC we are all law-abiding or just won't admit we could be tempted!!!

Couldn't agree more...

And the more I think about it. I would keep it. I'm sure the companies make more than enough off unclaimed gift cards or better yet, gift cards that lose their value over time, to cover it's cost.

Nothing worse than paying cash for a gift card to have it lose it's value if it's misplaced in a drawer for over a year. So in essence, your just giving cash to the company for christmas.

Naaaa, I'd steal a drink in a New York minute.

Speaking of which, it's ten pas ten, time to drink.

Me too. I've never had it happen with something of that value, but it happens to me relatively frequently with small items at Canadian Tire (once I got about 50 feet of brake line for $.39 because the girl didn't realize it was $.39/ft). I just keep my mouth shut. Small places, on the other hand, I'd be inclined to go back and pay.

I'm very black and white about issues like this. I am not a thief, I do not steal, and if I take/have something that belongs to someone else without their permission, then I consider it stolen. It does not matter if it is $0.05 or $300.00. My integrity is worth more than any of those amounts.

Your moral guide may vary.

So, what you're saying is that two wrongs do make a right?

Mathematics is the backbone of the universe isn't it? ;o)

From my own morally corrupt point of view I would happily see this as Karma. Be good every day and keep the free gifts coming :>)

going back and paying is the right thing to do.

although the sales girl might be out of a job when the manager finds out. thats an expensive mistake.

but its still.. the right thing to do.

If you can throw out an aphorism and equate the (insured) loss of one DVD player (their own mistake) to countless social injustices all the way along their supply chain, then sure.
