| Hiya All. I'm new to DPC, but comments I see made here suggest that almost everyone uses Photoshop in one incarnation or another for PP. I've had a look at Photoshop 7 and it doesn't seem all that intuitive to use. I'm just about to download a trial of Corel Paint Shop Pro X to try, which seems a little more geared toward dummies like me. Anyone use this? Anyone know how it stacks up against Photoshop? |

I really suggest you to try it.
I have used PaintShop Pro for long time. I find it more intuitive and easier to use (made for Windows for start).
(Also much better for web design stuff...)

I use PSPX and find it does all that I need it to do (don't know what its missing because I don't have PS to compare it to!) It has many features that I've yet to use but every time I learn a little more about post processing my pics, the feature I need is there. If you find you like it, here's a link to purchase it at a reduced rate for the full program.

I'm using PSP X (upgraded from PSP 9). It gets the job done for me at a darn good price (compared to PS). However, that said, there are a few things once in a while that come up in these forums that other members can do with PS that I can't with PSP. Example, fade an edit (one I'd like to do is apply gaussian blur and fade it back...no can do in PSP without using layers which makes it only applicable for advanced edit challenges). Another example is the use of some plug-ins (grunge, etc...). Many of the plug-ins are not available for PSP (there are some out there, just more for PS).

I have been using PSP9 and have found I can relate most of the tips from the PS users to the tools available in PSP9. I just got a copy of PS and am finding it more complicated to use overall. There are features in PSP9 that seem to be more user friendly and simpler to perform to get a similar effect to PS. Then again, as I dig deeper into figuring out PS, there are things you can do with it that you can't with PSP.
PSP is a great starting point for a reasonable price and allows you to get a quick start on developing those PP skills, IMO.

Got a few options for ya:
PSPX is a great program, and for the money works very well.
Photoshop Elements 4 - Photoshop's little brother, very agile, yet not overly complicated. Fairly inexpensive.
The Gimp - The open source answer to Photoshop, very powerful, somewhat complicated (comparable to PS), the best part is it's FREE.
Older versions of PS- Use of PS 6, 7 are all very alive here and a copy can be picked up at reasonable prices.
I myself use PS 7 and/or The Gimp for my processing.

Nothing at all against PSP, I've used it for many years. However, the entire time I have worked with digital, I have hoped for the day when I can get Photoshop. It is the best, period. GIMP is good, but still leaves a lot to be desired. PSP is better, but I'm personally convinced they have some problems with resizing and JPEG routines that cause minor quality problems if you don't know how to compensate. I could be wrong, but I'm just telling my impression.
If you NEED to save $$, go ahead and buy PSP or try GIMP. If you can really afford Photoshop - maybe one version back from Amazon or somewhere - do yourself a favor and go ahead and get it. If you don't you'll eventually wonder if you should. It is the best, even if it really costs more than it should.
