I think it would be good to have a thread where people can post possible photographers to be emulated. I'm afraid otherwise it's gonna be 130 Ansel Adams entries. If you post you get the following benefits:

a) if you chose the photographer yourself, it allows some people to at least know what the style is like without having to look it up.
b) it allows others to explore the same possibility (which allows you to keep anonymous (ie. if you post a photographer it doesn't automatically mean that your entry is the same photographer)).

This would be a huge benefit to me for sure. I don't know a lot of names of famous photographers beyond Ansel Adams whose work I have always admired and aspired to. I am actually going to be in NYC this weekend which would be a good opportunity to pay tribute, but I don't know the names of any famous NYC photographers.

quickly flipping through it seems that her pictures are not only of women but "strong" women.

edit: at least for that book! didnt know thats what it was for. Still, they are incredible.

And what's wrong with that? ;^)

Seriously, how many people voting are really going to know what/who is being emulated? Ansel Adams will immediately be considered for most B/W photo's submitted. Somebody posted on another thread that this is really another free study and I tend to agree with that statement.

Unless someone has a really cool link to a synopsis of all potential photographers being emulated (like the link in the "Phobia's" challenge), with examples to see - I can't see how people are going to vote other than on whether they like the challenge entry, and technical merits.

BTW, I'm including myself in that group of voters...

Ellen Von Unwerth (just do a google search)

I just look at the pictures (and French isn't so hard to make out).

There are other sites in English that feature Cartier-Bresson's work. Here's one from wikipedia:

Yes, what is a shame is that the challenge would have been better if it just WAS Ansel Adams, or a choice of three.

I just submitted mine, and it's not an Ansel Adams. I would HOPE, like I am going to do, is if you see the name of the famous photographer being given tribute to, you would take the time to at least do a google search on them IF you don't know who they are. I would hate to have it be where people only vote high for who and what they know (Ansel Adams, Andy Warhol, etc). I forsee a lot of Ansel and a lot of soup cans by Warhol, a lot of in-camera work by Patterson, and even David Meanix here with paper stuck to faces, BUT there are MANY more out there, like Jim Brandenson, and a more, more, more. Broaden your horizons and "learn" from this challenge in what you see. Just like some researched to find a famous photographer to give tribute to, also do the same and research the ones you don't know. In that, you will be learning even more about other artists and photography. If those here are truly interested IN learning from a challenge, then this is one in which you easily can.

I would suggest, in voting, to first vote those you know the style of. Those you don't, make a list of them, and search their style, and THEN vote on the others. BUT, can we hope for that miracle? Depending on how many entries, just WHO will do this? I know I will, and for those that say they don't have the time, there are several days to voting. Surely you can, and if you don't, at least don't vote them down just because you don't know them. In that case, I would say don't vote them at all. It's better then lowballing just because you may not know the artist.

I am not in wildlife because I fear many won't stick to the description of the challenge and give the illusion of a natural environment. The last Wildlife Challenge of the same, the blue ribbon winner's shot was done at the Dallas Zoo. I don't intend to enter Wildlife, and being from Florida I easily can, just because I don't want to be in a challenge where cheating can go on.

As for this one, it is much more of a "challenge" with basic editing, and I hope many research the artists before voting. UGGGH, I'm not really pleased with either exclusive challenge this round, but I never not enter if I can help it, and I'm the first entry in to Tribute.

I look forward to other tributes and learning from them.

There is nothing in the challenge rules that says you have to name who your tribute is for.

If you don't name them, then how will anyone know who the tribute is to? To me, it is only natural you would name the artist you are emulating in your title. If you do not do that, then your score may suffer.

I agree that if you choose someone other than a photographer that is extremely well recognized, you're probably going to get hurt in the voting.

The chances of the masses actually looking up and studying the photographer of your choice to see how well you emulated that is .. well.. next to nothing. That's not to say you shouldn't enter anyway, just be prepared for a lower score and/or disappointment. This is especially true if you decide on a photographer that has a style that is typically anti-DPC.. that is.. had a style that focussed more on human interest, or artistic styles that lean more towards dark, grainy, and/or out of focus elements.

It'll be interesting to look at, and I'm definitely curious about how it'll end up. Winding through 300 photos of 2 or 3 main really famous photographers, however, doesn't sound too thrilling, so let's hope people are a *little* more diverse than that.

Exactly, which gives it the free study flavor. Even if the photographer being tributed IS mentioned, in all honesty, how many voters of the hundreds that are cast, are going to know who it is? Yes, there will be some that will make an effort to find out, and some may already know...but the majority IMO will not. I'm not trying to be pesky about this...just looking at it realistictly.

May be better off NOT titling your entry with who you're paying tribute too. ;^)

Here is a "partial list" of famous photographers:

ANSEL ADAMS
ROBERT ADAMS
ALVAREZ BRAVO
ARBUS
ATGET
BELLOCQ
BLOSSFELDT
BOURKE-WHITE
BRANDT
BRASSAÏ
CALLAHAN
CAMERON
COBURN
CUNNINGHAM
DeCARAVA
DOISNEAU
EGGLESTON
EVANS
FENTON
FRIEDLANDER
GOWIN
GUTMANN
HILL&ADAMSON
HINE
KARSH
KERTÉSZ
KLEIN
KOUDELKA
LANGE
LARTIGUE
LAUGHLIN
LEVITT
MAPPLETHORPE
MEATYARD
MEYEROWITZ
MODEL
MODOTTI
MUYBRIDGE
NADAR
NEWMAN
O'SULLIVAN
OUTERBRIDGE
PARKS
PENN
RIIS
RODCHENKO
SALGADO
SHERMAN
SHORE
SMITH
SOMMER
STEICHEN
STIEGLITZ
STRAND
TALBOT
UELSMANN
WALDMAN
WATKINS
WEEGEE
WESTON
WHITE
WINOGRAND
WOLLEH

Now do you see how diverse this contest can be? Unless one artist alone was named to emulate, WHY should scores suffer just due to ignorance? This is why the name of the artist should be portrayed in the tribute you are giving. There are just too many of them out there, and how should many know what is appealing to DPC through which artist?

Should it all be about Ansel Adams just because he seems to be a DPC favorite? Then why not just have a challenge about Ansel Adams and have it be about the best Adams emulater?

I think this is going to be "one of those" challenges again :(
