His PURE Genius has just been proven! By linking to "that little punk" he has bumped himself up one from the bottom of the FOOL list.

I love him ... if I have a question about a setting or the best way to do something I always search his site. He explains things in a way I understand without having to pour over too much info in the manual. He also come through with little tricks I don't think I could figure out on my own. I think his site is perfect for someone like me ... noe a professional. The only thing I don't care for about his site are his self portraits ... he's got that crazy-eye thing going on & it freaks me out!

First on the scene.

Hello honeybrig. I am happy you have found his advice helpful. Have you found any other resources such as his for photography advice?

Hello to you togtog ... I usually just search what I need & always stumble upon his site. I guess it's because I'm a nikon user & his site is at the top of the search engine's results. I have checked out Fred MIranda and a few other sites but I am not a professional as most of you seem to be. I'm just a hack who really enjoys this as a hobby & because I use KR's site so often I thought I'd offer that point of view. I just searched some info and this site came up asking if he is a genius or a fool & I thought I'd offer an opinion. I'm not sure if he is either ... I just know that when I need to figure out a certain setting on my d200 I will find my answer on his site. If you have other sites you think would be helpful for me to visit I would love to add them to my list.

Man, if we could only take the attractive power of this thread and use it for good and not evil!

To answer the question first and foremost, I would say he's neither genius nor fool. He's a guy sharing what he knows from his own perspective. I've only been into photography for two years. When I started, I used his pages a lot (and still do at times). I think for those without much experience, his site is invaluable. Many times experience people (in any field, not just photography) often forget that what comes naturally to them might as well be a foreign language to the inexperienced.

His site gave me a good starting point. I had a Nikon D40 and he basically taught me how to use it. Now I have a D300 and have become pretty good with this camera. I pick through and get the info that will help me but not everything he suggests pertains to what I do. He has a strong lean toward wide and ultra wide lenses. I do wildlife stuff so I tend to be attracted to telephoto and super telephoto lenses. I have to sift through some of his advice on telephotos. For example:
would forget about this lens and get the Nikon 18-200mm VR instead, unless you really need the last few mm to get out to 300mm. If you get this 70-300mm VR you still need a normal zoom. With the 18-200mm VR, you've got all you need in one smaller lens that focuses three times as close and loses very little on the long end in exchange.

If you want a serious, dedicated tele zoom, I'd step up not much more in price to a professional 80-200mm f/2.8.

If it cost $250 - $300, as the other 70-300mm lenses have cost over the past 15 years, I'd be much more enthusiastic. Since the price has almost doubled, putting it almost into pro levels, I'd just say no and go with a pro lens instead.
Well I need more reach than the 18-200mm would give me for birds and other wildlife. My roommate and I had this discussion. He said just walk the extra 20 feet LOL. He obviously doesn't shoot wildlife. Often if you take one more step your subject spooks and you lose the opportunity. He then said: The reason to get this lens is if you:

1.) Shoot almost entirely telephoto and don't have or want the 18-200mm VR.
Well that's me so I bought it. This part I had to ignore:
Bad News:

1.) Too expensive. You can get a new professional 80-200mm AF-D (or a used 80-200mm AF-S) for not much more than this plastic amateur 70-300mm VR.
Again he's ignoring that with wildlife 100mm makes a huge difference! Before I bought this lens, I used the 55-200mmVR and trust me it's a world of difference.

So I would say to anyone that his site is quite useful but it is his opinion. I read his site along with Hogans and others. It's helpful if you know how to filter through it.

We can't, so here's a picture of a bunny with a pancake on it's head.

PS: Karmat says click the bunny!

Seriously, though, Ken Rockwell's site is very informative. As always, it's up to the Internet reader to take blogs with a grain of salt.

But this does not answer the question, do you like pancakes? and if so, does KenRockwell? Huh? I bet no one knows, and that is exactly why he should not be trusted. What do we really know about him if we do not know if he likes fluffy warm soft pancakes? I personally do not like fluffy warm buttery pancakes with syrup and this is why I am a maverick around here. I think of food that is outside the circle, does Ken? We don't know, he could like anything, even triangles. This would be very very bad.

Aside: I've always wondered what that was, so I looked it up. Oolong the pancake bunny.

But the pancake in question, the one on the bunny's head, is not a pancake as you would know it. It is a dorayaki; it is really a sandwich of two small pancakey layers with a filling of sweet red bean (azuki bean) paste. They're not eaten hot. They are not fluffy warm buttery pancakes with syrup. Often eaten with an accompanying cup of hot green tea - or in summer, maybe some ice oolong tea. ;-)

I don't know if ken Rockwell has been to Japan, but if he had, he might have had the dorayaki experience.

I think Ken gives some great advice and thats what matters to newbies. I think most of his advice is aimed at newbies, obviously if you are an expert you are in a better position to judge if what he is saying is true or not, but hey, look on the bright side, his name alone brings traffic to this site so it can't be all bad!

I am not Ken Rockwell or a bot and I use Sigma cameras which I know he dislikes.

I did get my girlfriend to buy a Nikon D40 based on his review and some other reading I did on the internet and I have to say what a fantastic little camera it is.

Genius? I think he is a good photographer but not Ansel Adams by a long way.
Fool? Taking time to post helpful info on the Web, I think not.

Just a decent guy? absolutely, when I found someone using one of his pics I let him know and he took the time to e-mail me back and say thanks.

Just because someones opinion doesn't meet with your own does not mean he is a fool. It is after all an opinion which is exactly what this is, my opinion. If you don't like it I will not lose any sleep over it and I doubt very much if he does either.

By the way hello all and I won't be a one time poster.

Welcome to the site Paul. I hope you'll enjoy the other forums and get to know the people. We really are a friendly bunch, despite appearances within this thread. :)

Thanks for that, I am always a little cautious about paying money to websites so not sure if I will be going in for the challenges, but who knows.

Yes, I'd love to see what you can do with a Sigma SD14. It's an interesting camera. And since so many of us are Canon/Nikon users, it's nice to throw another camera in the mix. :)

You do not need to be a registered member to participate in challenges. As far as I am concerned, I like the forums , which can be quite useful time to time.

How do you like your SD14? (I do not own any Sigma gears, but I will be curious to know)

Enjoy!
