Going to be in the Denver area on Saturday. I will have a couple of hours to go out and take photos. Does anyone know a nice area to go to get some good waterfall, mountains, and valley type pictures. If you have any ideas I would appreciate it.

I will be in Denver to take a Microsoft test in the morning, and thought I would take some pictures in the afternoon and then make the 5 to 6 hour drive home that evening. Long day, but I don't get to go to Denver very often and thought I could get some nice photos.

Thanks in advance....

Let me think about it a bit more but --You could head up I-70 to Idaho Springs. There are a couple waterfalls up there, a water-mill and a hot springs that I've never been to but have heard about. Then you could drive over to Central City/Black Hawk area. The quaint old mining towns have been taken over by gambling casinos but you can find some rustic, historic beauty left. Going back down Golden Gate Canyon will take you in a giant loop back into Golden. The valley through the canyon is beautiful and there should be a few waterfalls left.

the water-mill is pretty cool... i think my favorite place is Estes park...although this time of year, the coolest part of the park is closed down. there is a waterfall somewhere between denver & boulder. heres a shot from theere (obviosuly during the summer months) its really pretty, not sure what it looks like during the winter... clear creek canyon is beautiful, its right outside of Golden. reply to me if you want more info on Denver... i went to college out there check out this picture for a shot of the waterfall...
here's a self portrait there...

hmmmm. The problem will be going from Denver to scenic areas may take some real time. The mountains just got dumped on. I would say you need to give yourself 2 hours up and 2 hours back, absolute minimum. Some of the mountain roads and passes may be temporarily closed, but it is early enough, they may be open already. I would contact them by phone and ask what is available or not.

I noticed you live in Garden City. I competed in a golf tournament at Southwind CC a couple of months ago and there are two routes (I am sure you know this) to Denver. One is north up to I70. But there is also a highway that goes due west and you can connect to I-25. All up and down I25 there are some good stopping point to check out the Mountains and scenery. You could always take the I25/Kansas highway route back and stop in Colorado Springs and take pictures of Pike's Peak with some snow on it and even drive up into the mountains. You have old mining towns like Cripple Creek which are only 20 miles up. You can mapquest it. Or the Florrisant Fossil Beds. All that stuff up there will offer nice views. Phantom Canyon Road etc.

Just ideas.

If you do go to the mountains just be care and take a jacket it has been snowing and sleet most of the day (Thursday). Could make for some amazing winter/snow shots.

Good luck on the test.

elpy, if you see this. Can you tell me exactly where your picture of the waterfall was taken? Especially if it is somewhere around Denver/Boulder. Thanks.

Boulder Falls
Boulder Falls is outside of Boulder, no hiking involved.
Also if you go out I70 and get off at the Silver Plume exit and go under the highway and follow the road parallel to I70 you can find several interesting shots of Clear Creek.

I have a description of several Denver area hikes in my blog: Don's blog
