Hi everyone, I'm quite new to this website - working on my 3rd challenge entry this week. Loving every minute of it!
I wonder whether someone can help me understand the rules in the Basic Editing challenges. My first challenge entry was for 'delicate' (2 weeks ago). The photo is at http://www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=248373 So as to be sure not to break the rules I simply cropped my photo but did no other editing. I received a comment (from macpapas) saying that the colours were rather muted. I would have liked to play with the colours but wasn't sure what is allowed. I use Paint Shop Pro (not photoshop) and would have like to use things like: adjust contrast and brightness. Also, can I alter colour saturation and colour balance?
Any advice would be great. Thanks! |

Yes contrast, saturation, levels are all allowed in basic edit mode

| You can adjust the brightness, saturation, contrast, etc as long as you do it on a whole picture basis. You just can't make a selection and adjust the settings on a small part of the picture. |

| The central rule in basic editing is that you are not allowed to do something in one area tha you don't do in another area. So this exludes dodging and burning, cloning, any spot editing. Layers are OK but only in normal mode because the other modes violate the " all over " rule. |

I think I need to learn how to use a lot more of the features of my editing program. I have only ever played with a few parameters - I've never used 'curves' or anything. Thanks BrennanOB for the explanation. I reckon I've got the idea now - I must alter everything or nothing. That makes sense.

ADJUSTMENT layers are OK -- ones which apply Curves, Levels, etc.
You can't make a new layer containing any pixels under Basic rules. |

| I have just tried applying a couple of quick alterations to my original 'delicate' entry photograph. I can see straight away that the photo has much more 'pop'! I can't wait to edit my challenge photo this week. Thanks everyone =;-) |

And remember that within these adjustment layers you may adjust individual colors at will. You can bump saturation on yellow and change the hue of red, for example, quite legally. Have fun!

No "effects filters" can be used in Basic challenges except for sharpening, blurring, and noise-reduction.
If you mean something which simulates a color filter (like you'd put in front of your lens) you should be able to use that.

This was discussed by the SC some time ago, and there was no clear consensus. Bearing in mind that effects filters are prohibited in basic rules, I'd suggest that most of what is present in the OptikVerve package is legal, but some of it may be deemed illegal. The parts that are cerainly legal are:
- using the film grain (ISO) check boxes
- using the B+W conversion
- Using the color filters (easily replicated with curves)
Using other effects filters within the OptikVerve toolset might be flirting with DQ, though. If you think you're applying an effect other than adding noise, blurring, or shifting color, you're probably outsie the rules.
