What do you all think about the biweekly contests? The idea was to make the photographers not feel overwhelmed. It also gives more time for users to vote.

Would you rather the contest be weekly or biweekly as it is now?

I know some people who were planning on taking shots still didn't find the time to. I don't know if less time would make that number higher. Also, as there are more pictures, voters may need to come back a couple of times to vote in order to get them all. They may need a couple weeks to go back.

An alternative though would be to have 2 concurrent challenges offset by a week so that you could, if you wanted to, do 1 one week and do 2 the next.

Actually, yeah, I like the bi-weekly but someone I talked to that signed up said the deadline came too quickly. I think, perhaps, that will be different when things get rolling in a week or two. I like the bi-weekly format, though for the contests.

However, I think the two weeks for voting is a bit long. Maybe one week?

So you'd like something like:

WEEK 1 : Topic posted
WEEK 2 : and submissions accepted

WEEK 3 : Vote for Week 1 + 2's entries.

WEEK 4 : Post results for WEEK 3

and continue ?

Having a week where voters do nothing but look at past winners doesn't solve an 'idle time' problem. I think it will seem like there's more to do when a) there are more photographers taking pictures. b) it's not the first challenge ... and we have votes and viewing of the last winners going on at the same time.

Agreed.

The way it is now is fine for me, but I didn't say it had to continue on a four-week schedule. It could be in three-week blocks.

Either way, I've got to go get my table shot done.

i think you guys should stop being so friggin lazy and do it every week. the last thing i want to do is wait 2 weeks for a new challenge. people want something they can go to every monday morning and be entertained. the deadline for submission should be sunday night at 12am and the voters should be able to vote monday - friday. that gives the photographers a weekend to get their pics together and the voters something to do on monday cause most of us voters have meetings on tuesday, lunch meetings on wednesday, visitors on thursday, and cs on friday

I was just thinking that these challenges are too far apart when I ran across this post. Looking at the numbers of people who have voted, it appears that most had completed their voting within the first week. Likewise for the photographers, all seem to have been submitted and there is still almost a week to go.

I don't think I am the only one who is anticipating any new challenge and make it a point to get out and get a photo ready to submit. If one isn't excited enough to get a photo submitted within 7 days, I think the extra week would just be an excuse.

So sayeth I. (some ametuers just think they know it all, huh?)

I agree with you that the challenges are too far apart. We've been toying with different ideas from shortening time span to creating 2 concurrent challenges or even semi-concurrent challenges based on skill set. However this is all down the road as we grow.

As for shortening, there were 93 unique voters for the last challenge of Road Signs -- so far my own image has only 70 votes. Taking into account the fact that we have 204 users, I don't think that everyone is as dedicated to the site as we are. I'd like to see at least a 75-90% voter turn-out for the challenges.

Your thoughts?

I stand corrected. After having said that, I have seen the numbers go up. Waiting is part of the game. Most other photograph contests make you wait a whole lot longer. Maybe we should all quit complaining and just enjoy...

Beginning on the 1st of March, we will try out 10 day challenges.

:)

I think it would be helpful to include 2 weekends in the time-frame. Some challenges will require outdoor daylight photos, and some people can only do this on the weekend. With 10 days, some challenges will only get one weekend, and if you're out-of-town or busy, you miss your chance. Just my thoughts...

I couldn't agree with you more about having two weekends. The 10 day period will be a trial. If no one is happy with the outcome, we'll change it back.

I'm interested in two concurrent two week challenges, offset by a week. That way you could appease the people who want a little more time to shoot, and the people who want more frequent challenges. It's the best of both worlds! You get to take a whole two weeks to prepare for any one competition, but you also get a new challenge and a chance to see other people's pictures and vote every week.

Week 1: Challenge A
Week 2: Challenge B
Week 3: Vote A / Challenge C
Week 4: Vote B / Challenge D
Week 5: Vote C / Challenge E
... and so on

If someone wanted to take a more casual approach, they could do every other challenge and work at a rate comparable to the current system, but still have the chance to view and vote on new pictures weekly. Someone more fanatical about it (like me) could bust their humps to make a new picture every week. It's flexible.

I also agree with the comments that it'd be nice to have the schedule normalized to the work week. All submissions by Sunday at midnight and on Monday the voting starts, we could all have a little something to look forward to on an otherwise depressing day. ;)

Keep it as is.
Less waiting time and more of a challenger to take that winning photo.

I think anything less than a weekly schedule is too long. People will forget about the site on a two week schedule, and on a schedule somewhere in between, say 10 days, it isn't predictable. It would be good if new challenges started on the same day of the week every week. This will allow people to not have to check to see when the deadline is, and to get into a habit of checking the site/submitting photos/voting, on whatever day of the week is best for them.

It might also be good to TELL people what the next two (or more) challenges will be, while only accepting submissions from the current challenge. That will keep people interested who don't want to participate in the current challenge, and it will allow people to have more time to think of what they want to do.

I think announcing a challenge a week ahead of time might do the trick. I also like the idea of having challenges start/end on the same day of the week (end Sunday night sounds good). So the schedule would look like:

Week 1
Vote Challenge A, Submit Challenge B, Announce Challenge C
Week 2
Vote Challenge B, Submit Challenge C, Announce Challenge D

and so on.

That way, there's something happening every week (to appease the enthusiastic) and there's enough lead time to take photos (to appease the procrastinators like me). :^)

I think the contest should be biweekly, how about you?

Difficult choice, really.
Oh, and this thread is four years old.

10 day challenges? How silly :P

I really like the idea of a fortnightly challenge. My brain just doesn't work fast enough for weekly. I mull over ideas but on the occasions I think of something I seldom have time left to make it happen and I don't bother.

I'd certainly like to see if a fortnightly would mean I entered more or not...
