I'm new to the forum and maybe you have discussed this before so my apologies in advance--but why dont you run a simultaneous competition that doesn't have a date restriction and see if the quality of photos submitted is higher or lower.

Our first couple challenges weren't date restricted, but now we have over 1,000 users -- if you thought people didn't finish voting now, see what happens with 250 submissions :)

This was also the original idea for the 'challenge' -- the idea is to improve your digital photography skills, not to compare your best photo you've ever taken with someone else's.

That is exactly what keeps me coming back! If I submitted a best photo, I wouln't be back until I got a new "best photo"

This is a problem I have with the camera club I'm in. They have club challenges all the time. They will issue a topic and everyone will bring in either prints or slides for on site club judging.

It's VERY difficult for me to compete in these challenges because some of these photographers have been in this hobby since way before I was born. They have a stock of photos that they can pull from for these challenges.

I would have a MUCH better chance of being competitive if the photo had to be made during a certain time period like we do here. I haven't had 50 years to build a library to pull from. But, I think I could compete with any of them if we had to make the shot within a 1-week timespan.

In this particular instance, I think that my camera club participation would dwindle if the challenges were like DPChallenge. The majority of the club members are older. I don't think that some of them have taken any new photos in the last 2 or 3 years... Digital photography is not widely accepted by this group. I can only participate with a digital photo during a print competition. Print competitions happen about 5 times a year and the rest are slides. When the club meets 24 times a year, 5 opportunities for digital work is not in *my* best interest.

I have joined this camera club to keep me interested in 35mm work. I LOVE digital but I need to stay sharp on 35mm as well. I'm not one of these people who thinks digital is better/worse than 35mm. Each format has it's place and they are sometimes interchangeable and sometimes not. I *do* love the flexibility of digital, but I also enjoy a little of the more exacting skills required to make 35mm shots.
