Has anyone tried this, or would you want to try it?
Not me, I'd be afraid I wouldn't catch my camera!

And I thought I was pushing it by bringing my camera out into the river and setting it up on a tripod! I'd be too afraid of dropping it or jarring the internal gizmos!

I'm thinkin you should do this with a $100 P&S with a 10 and 2 second timer and not with a $1000 plus camera and lens. Well I guess you could do it with them if you have money to throw away. I pesonally don't have any money.
I wonder what they would look like if you set it on bulb and just kept throwin it up in the air?

A related (and safer) exercise from Freeman Patterson's book is to hang the camera by its strap and set it to twirling while waiting for the timer to go off.

Another saftey measure might involve an old Hula Hoop and some cloth ...

Throw your camera into the air with a spin on it, and hope!

Using the self-timer, with preset focus and exposure (manual mode) and time the toss to have the camera airborne when the timer releases the shutter.

you basicly toss you camera in the air then catch it, before it smashes on the ground

You might also be interested in the related genre of Kite Aerial Photography.
You can search Google under that term for more sites, but I think this is the "original" one : )

I've done this with a few different cameras, including my 10D. Great fun to do and it's not quite as scary as you think it's going to be!

P.S. Check out the Camera Toss group on flicker for plenty of tips.
