Here are a couple of outakes from my branch submission including an advanced edit of the entry, for those folk that loved the image. A big twig up (you can guess which one) to the 80odd voters that gave me a 4 of less with no explaination - i appricate that ;)

this was by FAR the most painful selfportrait i have done, and one of the most difficult to pull off. It is also one of my favourite sets for the year. I am trying to decide which to print, if you want to add your 2c

defintely an amazing shot...very artistic...i love it!

i hate to see all those 4's and lower scores...i'm sure those are the people who don't put thought into their entries or votes.

Wow. I too am greatly surprised by the 5.6 average that picture received. What were people thinking?

For what it's worth, I gave it a 10 and marked favorite.

This is another reason that I have posted a thread in website suggestions to encourage slightly more accountability to people who only comment on photos they rate highly.

Sorry don't know how to link threads in posts yet. Please check Average Vote on Comments thread.

I would love to see this site become more about people helping those that need help rather than handing adulation to masters.

Also, perhaps it would be wise to leave some comments marked unhelpful.

My personal use of the helpful is that even if the commenter left a message like "nice", the comment is positive, but not really helpful. Helpful comments are comments that try to give you ways to improve.

The recent addition of two challenges per week will likely have the effect of reducing entries in a challenge. This will allow more people to vote and comment more thoughtfully. I hope.

I know it's unrelated, but lately, my personal life has been about making the change from someone who tries to help to someone who is genuinely helpful. It's a subtle difference, but an important one.

For some, the road is longer than others.

I thought this was a wonderful image and scored it high. The voters, collectively, evidently weren't as kind...

The one you submitted was a great photograph, but I prefer the second one in the bunch. The expression on the face captured the essence of the melancholic character Johnny Depp portrayed so well.

Also, I second eschelars comment. Well put, and more eloquent that I could have hoped to make myself.

It's a very cool photo. I didn't get to vote on it but would have rated in the 8-10 bracket. It's original, moody, and elegant. I'd be ecstatic if I took something 1/2 as interesting as that entry. :D

Wow, it's a great photo but you really need to grow a thicker skin if you want to remain sane on DPC!

Your remarks here I find very offensive. Telling people to stick a branch up their ass? Then on your comments section on your photo you call people out in public. That is also rude and uncalled for. A lot of people are bitching lately so if you can't beat them join them huh?

Your voting breakdown above a 6:

37 - 7's
30 - 8's
09 - 9's
11 - 10's

Also 23 comments during the challenge and 5 favorites either after or during. No stat to tell which. And finished 72 out of a whopping 426 entries. IMO that is nothing to bitch about.

If I received stats like that I sure as hell wouldn't complain.

On your image IMO it is technically good, but in a challenge of over 400+ entries you need something that has punch and stands out above the rest. Yours doesn't have it.

For reason such as this is why I have stopped voting and submitting for now.

Problem is while you're voting you have no idea if its a master or someone who's submitting their first-ever-really-amazing-shot. I would hate to finally get something in the top 20 and get 2 comments. I might cry. :)

I think numbers two and five are very nice, and would do great in print ..(especially 2)

I didnt vote this time around, so I don't know what the other images are like in comparison, but your take on the challenge is creative and original, I would have voted high as well, having said that, I also think everyone is entitled to their opinion :)

I like them. Very Tim Burton like.
I personaly would have liked to see more of the whites of the eyes, maybe a tighter crop to the face?
DPC has it's flaws and it's audience. Compensate for good scores.

So the title of this thread is "If DPC hates it you know its different".

Well, I guess your image wasn't that different!!!!! Your average vote was well above 5. As rex mentioned, you finished in the top quartile!!! All that points to DPC actally liking your image. Therefore, the image isn't different.

I love what DPC hates. And I love your image. One of the most creative, well set up images in the challenge.

Since you asked about hair... I thought the submission in the challenge was too dark (I like to see details, and I couldn't see much). A hair/scoch/hint/bit more light (a little lighter) would have gotten a higher score from me. I recognized the artistic qualities, but it was too dark for my preference.

is it such a blow to your ego to accept that some people just don't like it?

There's nothing technically wrong with it ... i just don't like it. That doesn't mean I hate you and it doesn't mean I have a closed mind and it doesn't mean I don't respect your work. I just don't like it, no big deal.

I didn't vote on this challenge, but I would have given it a 4 or 5.

Well tell me how it would have punch instead of bitching at me about things i didnt say. I think it did stand out. Sure wasn't another like it.

And i was not calling out commenters, mearly replying to thier questions. Were not allowed to PM were not allowed to reply to comments - what the heck ARE we allowed to do???
