a kind of free study challenge for members, but with NO EDITING AT ALL rule. Straight out of the camera.
I know, it should lead to too much work for the admins, but it should be interesting to judge the PHOTOGRAPHIC skills only |

| I feel that extended editing rules for members are more and more Photo editing than photographic challenges. |

Yeah, but still ... as a registered member I find this idea quite refreshing. That might even get me moving. :-)

| So uhh, which camera's are aloud? Some allow you to shift hues and brightness within the camera. Others lack most of the features. Basically the users with the most expensive cameras will win the technical aspects. |

| looking at those threads it doesn't appear that it's ever been done due to too many what if's? what is acceptable editing camera adjustment etc, etc, etc, well if a picture is supposed to be shot in portrait, turn the camera therefore no rotating required use a tripod and adjust it accordingly as far as settings and cameras that offer advanced controls that's another story i suppose? |

On the contrary, most prosumer cameras have more processing within the camera. DSLRs do very little processing in camera. Prosumer camera do quite a bit of contrast and sharpening within the camera.

Right, I didn't mean the majority of cameras, which after I read my post it sounded like it. Oops. =o
I meant that some camera's that people own may not have any features described, and others with tons of features. They are all different, thats all. So its hard to rate based on such. |

Two issues
1. What about those who shoot RAW - what do they do? What does no editing mean for them?
2. With most DSLRs some sharpening is needed on the image as it comes out of the camera. Somehow the no editing seems to be in conflict with the design of the higher end camera. |

I'm still, and probably always will struggle alittle with PS. Being an old darkroom rat, I'm very conscious of getting the best shot possible out of the camera, instead of "I can fix it in post editing." I can sharpen and increase color saturation somewhat with my camera, but I really think the differnce is negligable.

I'd love to see a back to basics type of challenge, in either members or open. And I don't think it would hard to administer. But there is always a lot of opposition every time it comes up so don't hold your breath.

Yes, due to recent events on DpChallenge, NeatImage and other things, I think we are due for a no editing challenge. No crop no nothing, resize only.

Yes, we could all shoot jpg for one challenge once in a while and play with the in-camera processing to get what we want.

Since the allowed format is jpeg there is always going to be some algorithm used to generate the compressed image whether it is done in camera or when converting RAW to jpeg. Although there are differences between cameras I doubt those are going to be significant enough to determine the outcome of a challenge. Also any time you resize/resample the image there are going to be optional settings. I don't think you can really get a situation when there is no alteration.
That being said, I would love to see such a challenge and would optimistically hope that people would catch the spirit of the challenge rather than spend hours tweaking their in camera settings, although even that wouldn't be a bad learning experience.

Yes, I think we could use a change from the normal images we see here. I'm not saying there bad, as a matter of fact I think some of the best images in the world come from right here.
I know some cameras are different with different settings, but lets live with it and do our best. We have had these challengs in the past, and I think we out due.
Don't get me wrong I love photoshop but lets give up the luxeries and try this out. Come on D&L
