Well I've started my search for a new camera. So far I think the hot ticket is the Canon EOS-300D Rebel. I'm a new photographer, just learning about cameras so i don't want anything OVER THE TOP. Also, I'm experimenting with all styles so I need something versatile. And I want a camera say.. 10 steps up :) from the dinky one I have now, Canon Power Shot A400, which has actually done me pretty well which is why I'm stickin with Canon. Am I making the right decision???

I got my Rebel mid summer and I love it! It's not too hard to learn, although I'm still trying to fine tune all the neat little features it has. The mess of lenses you can get for it makes it an even better choice, in my mind. The kit lens isn't bad, but I'm already yearning for another one. And compared to a Point & Shoot, you'll be blown away! I find that I can't go back and use my little 2.1 MP anymore, the images just aren't anything near as good.

So I'd say, go for it!!

You could also go with the 350d XT, which is basically a "newer, enhanced version", of her old sister, the 300d!
Wanting a "friendly camera, not over the top" doesn't necessarily mean you need to buy an old camera.
But that doesn't mean you'll be getting "chit" stuff, as well. Either one of them will suit you very well!
The thing is, the 350d is faster, lighter, newer, with better resolution, and on! This way, as time go by, you won't be that outdated!

I can't stand the toyish look and sound of the 350D. Bought the 300D a few months ago and i'm loving it. Especially with the Battery Grip.

I don't really mind not having AI Servo, CFn (thanks to rus folk) or some other things not included in the 300D.

Besides.. 8mp isn't that much compared to 6mp

For the extrar 80 dollars or so I would really consider getting the 350 I was a little hesitant because it is so small but I am really happey with the performance the good outways the bad of getting it so you should really consider it.

I would consider the current batch of entry level dSLRs for one reason. Speed. All of them have near instatnt start up time and much faster/bigger buffers. It really sucks when I take a shot and have to wait about 3 secs to review it or when I take 4 shots and it takes forever to wait for the buffer to empty so I can take the next shot. I've missed many shots b/c of that. This is especially true if you shoot RAW. For slightly more money, I think the Nikon D50 or the Canon XT is worth a serious look.

The Rebel is a beauty, but as yido said it's a little bit slow compared to the new kids on the block...and a little bit plasticky for monster lenses.

My 300D did a great job for me for about a year and a half shooting equestrian sports for the odd magazine.

I'd say go with the 300D, at the end of the day it's a very nice camera and a very capable camera (proof) Keeping up with the latest equipment is just a sure fire way to spend a LOT of money.

I think I'd go for 300D rather than 350D. In my case, I chose Nikon D50 and I am 100% happy with my decision. :)

thanks for the info guys!! you're makin my decisions easier! :)

Eventually the 300D will seem very limiting. Until you get to that point it's a very nice camera. I used mine for about a year before I got very frustrated with it.

Get a 350D instead of the 300D... I dont know the price difference but its worth it in many ways. For example near instantenous start up vs 3 seconds. 8 mega pixels, newer sensor, smaller, lighter, no need to 'unlock' features using third party firmware, the xt comes in black, it is faster shot to shot, and lots more... look up the 350D review on dpreview.com it lists all the features.

although nico, the 300D is a big bigger and fits in your hand bettter if you have fat hands like i do
thats a reason why i like the 300d better simply because of the size

tru.dat! Bigger cameras are much more comfortable to hold, not because I have fat fingers, but because I have large awkward hands.

for someone upgrading from a powershot A400 i think smaller is better. When I was upgrading from a powershot G5 the 350D felt perfect while the 20D felt like i was holding a large brick. I have big hands but i am very comfortable with the smaller body of the 350D.

i have very small hands... which is an obvious thing i would have looked over in choosing a camera... so thank you very much for bringing up that point!

Make sure you test them at the store before buying, especially if you buy online.

I'm not sure the Sigma cameras are really as good as the canon cameras. Not only are you pretty much stuck with only sigma lenses, you're stuck shooting only raw, and I could be wrong, but with no automatic modes. Other than that they're good cameras, but I wouldn't recommonend them over a canon or a nikon.

I don't know your budget, but if I lived in the US, I would have bought the Rebel XT with the 18-55mm available for 789.15$ shipped at dell.com using coupon code 7WBQ7X?QCSZ33G for an extra 60$ off, which is less what the 300D costs in most stores.

In Canada, there is no such deal. :(

i've been looking at the XT as well. My budget = less than $900, so thank you very much for the coupon code. Any more input on the XT??

Dell has lots of coupons. There's a list at //cheap.typepad.com/cheapster/dellpage.html

If you can wait a month, it will be near the end of the quarter, and you may see some better deals.

My primary complaint with the XT is its undersized grip. If you have small hands, then that may not be an issue, and the camera is otherwise far superior to the 300D IMO (instant startup, lower noise, higher resolution, mirror lockup, flash exposure compensation, custom modes and filters...). If you have the patience to wait, the Dell coupons are the best deal around (that's how I got mine).

The current DSLRs are more like 100x better than an A400. If you want closer to 10X, I'd consider the Powershot S2 IS for $440. It's not a DSLR, but with good speed, a 12X image-stabilized lens, full manual controls, a 0cm macro mode (really), and an excellent movie feature, it's very capable.

i'm one to throw a vote in for a nikon D70 instead of a canon 350d. i just got my 20d and im loving it, and i was never really satisfied with the 350d. for the same amount of money you could get a d70 or d70s which IMO are solid and beautiful cameras.
