I have been saving up for a new 1Ds Mark II and now have all the money plus a few K to work with, but I keep wondering if I should wait.

The 5D will be anounced in a few days and I don't know how or if that will affect the price of the 1Ds Mark II. If I wait, however, I feel I might miss that one great image.

Example: I got my 1Ds and my 85mm 1.2 on the same evening in 2004. The next day I went out for a (aimless) drive to see what I could test the setup on. The first picture I took was a landscape I blew up to 54x24 and have since sold 5 copies from between $850 and $900. If I had waited then I never would have gotten that shot.

I guess I'm just using this as a sounding board so you all are welcome to comment if you like.

You already have very capable equipment. It seems to me like the only shots you would miss are ones you just don't go out for. If it were me, I would wait a while.

I'm gonna miss all those wide shots with the 20mm and shots with the 85mm that I have been waiting to do. Both lenses seem so un-remarkable on the 1D Mark II that I keep my zoom attached (and as a rule I am not fond of zooms)

I doubt that a 1D camera will be affected much by a prosumer camera release? Only in the used market I'd bet, and even there... hardly at all. But who knows... so I'd say wait to see if canon announces the new camera officially on monday, and then if they do, see how long it'll be till they ship them to stores.

I'm really confused why you feel you're going to miss the wide angle shots if you already have a FF camera?

The 1 Ds Mark II, I dont think the price is going to drop, that is a camera in its own bracke of performance, if it was replacing the the 1Ds mark II, then yea the price would drop, but otherwise its going to stay the same,

You should just get a d2x.

I don't. I sold the 1Ds a long time ago. The 1D Mark II is a crop sensor.

As soon as it comes out in FF I may seriously consider that option.

(I was holding my breath and started turning blue)

I don't remember seeing the price drop on the 1D2 when the 20d came out... and they share a lot more than the 5d (if it comes out) will with the 1ds2... the price will not drop and the only time it did drop was when they were no more placed orders and that stores could finally place them on their shelves.

I would say buy what you need now, the waiting game is neverending. The 5D targets a completely different market from the 1Ds II, I highly doubt that the 1Ds II price will come down significantly.

I don't think the 5D is going to be rated "prosumer". I think that designation goes to the Rebel.

And, I need enlightening, what would I be able to do with the 1Ds Mark II that I couldn't do with a 5D?

weather sealing, 45 AF points vs 9, more MP, built-in grip etc...

Weather sealing I could live without and I think I could live with a 13Mp body. 9 AF points? Is that like the Rebel with the little red dots? No. That was one of the main things I disliked about the 300D.

45 AF points? How many AF points does one really need? Mine came with a few -- I use only one.

More AF points mean less chance of hunting and better decisions on scenes with elements at multiple depths. The 20D has 9, for instance, and is wrong often enough that I have to go to manual focus on a regular basis.

Really. I never have tried a 20D. The Rebel was like that. I only kept it as a back-up for a few months and never got much use out of it.

I guess I should just bust it out and get the 1Ds Mark II. I would hate to have to wait until October or November to try the 5D just to find I still want the 1Ds Mark II.

What's the rush, man... I mean why, for your purposes...

It's not a rush. I have been waiting and saving for this for months. Now that I have the money and am at the moment of truth I get sentimental and want a K1000 with better eyes.

I have to say that this comment leaves me perplexed... you have a 1dMkII right? well you since you have a 1DMkII you have the exact same type of little red dots as you had with the 300d... you even have almost 7times as many....in fact your camera as 45selectable points which you are certainly used to by now. I can't see this comment making any type of sense since you have a 1DMkII. and I also can't begin to understand how a person who owns a EOS1 body would want to move "down" to a "semi-pro" one... even people with older 1D or 1Ds bodies would never go back. This is a first.

I'm guessing you have never used the 300D. The little red dots (not the little red rectangles) are far different on the 300D as opposed to the 1Ds or the 1D Mark II. On the 300d they appear as led lights and offer nowhere the near flexablility of the AF system on the 1 series bodies.

As far as stepping down from a 1 series body, how would I know? I have never seen a 5D to know how much of a step was really there. That's why I asked.

I did play with a 300d once but I just can't remember how it was. as for the step down... well the 5d will be very much in the same "feel" as a 20d. I am still not convinced this camera is an actual reality yet anyway.
